A local vet is now performing this procedure.  The cost is about $1800 at his clinic.

Wow;  very exciting.  In the past the only place was LaJolla, CA.  Soon it will be standard procedure everywhere.  Nan

I had heard this was available in California but didn't know where.
I hope that as it becomes more "standard procedure everywhere" that it also becomes a little less expensive!

I'm pretty sure there's a vet in the Grand Rapids, MI area who has been performing this procedure for the past few years, too.  There was a news article about a police K9 in that vicinity who had the procedure done, which enabled him to continue working.

There is also a vet in US (Richard Vuillard ?sp), who is trying stem cell treatment (stem cells from bone marrow) for DM.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if it works, for arthritis and DM?

Abby, I googled Richard Vuillard's name, but came up with nothing. Is there any way you can find out for sure who it is that is doing the research on DM. MY girl has DM and I'd really like to look into this. In the meantime I will do my own research to try and find out more info. Thank you!
Char

Charity, Great news about the arthritis. Thank you for sharing this information. Stem cell transfers are the wave of future medicine from what I have heard. The mother of a friend of mine has macular degeneration and she will be getting treatment soon to restore her vision. They are going to use her own stem cells. Although stem cell transfer treatment is still in the experimental stages it has been shown to be extremely successful thus far.  They've been doing it in Europe for quite some time. It is very exciting!

I am happy to be able to contribute.  I agree, this is very exciting!
Good luck to  your friend's mom.

Starrchar's site also had good info and they cautioned that it was still in developmental stages and problems may arise.  But, I for one am keeping my fingers crossed that the problems (if any) are minimal and easily resolved.
I didn't realize that AKC was helping to fund the research.

Way cool a possible treatment for dogs with DM.  Thx for sharing Star & Charity.

Apologies Charr, I spelled it wrong, but see you found it anyway. There is something else I want to look out for you, and I will put a link up here for you. It may be tomorrow now.
