Dear Fellow Dog Enthusists,

Michigan State Senator Steven Bieda has introduced Bill 0574.

This would make all dog breeders in Michigan responsible for ALL CONTAGIOUS DISEASES for a full 30 days after the puppy has been sold, and 90 days for genetic illnesses.

As dog breeders, we all know that once a puppy leaves our home we are not in control of where the puppy goes, or what it is exposed to. If this Bill passes, dog breeders would be open to all sorts of litigation and monetary losses for things that are out of their control.

Please pass this information on to all of your dog friends and your local kennel/breed clubs. We need to organize, and do something about this quickly. Write in to Senator Bieda as well as all of your local Representatives. Also make your veterinarian aware of this Bill and if they are breeder friendly ask them if they are willing to possibly sign a petition against this Bill. No vet should want to make breeders responsible for illness for 30 days. If so, maybe you need to find another vet!

We seriously need to get on this people! Please cross post this to anyone and everyone you know!

Then...Once a vet has signed off on a Health Certificate...and if the puppy/dog comes down with a Contagious disease...they should be held responsible for clearing said dog...
This will make the ball keep rolling until someone squeals...like the Vets...and at least the Vet will be taken to court for costs and this will also keep the courts jammed...I bet this will make the Senator's phone keep busy...

Maybe I am the one being dense...but, it seems to me that a modicum of research by the bill's sponsor would have shown him that contagious diseases usually have an incubation period of considerably less than thirty days, AND that  a breeder isn't responsible for a puppy who is exposed to parvo, for example, ten days after being sold and transferred to the new owner.    Do you have any idea what prompted this bill?

Surely, there will be at least one opportunity to address the legislative body publicly?  Do you have any idea when that is likely to be?   That is the time to have vets and representatives from the veterinary board "educate" the legislators, so they can understand how idiotic this bill is.

There are people working on this - meeting with legislators and educating them.  Hopefully they will listen.
