I have one neutered GS 3.5 yrs old had him as a pup and would like to get a female spayed as companion for him and me. Would I be asking for trouble to bring a working female into the house for this purpose? I am 58 years old, retired, active and have the room. I know how some breeders feel about putting their working dogs in non-working homes.....thanks

Baxter, if you select a working-line female who has medium- to low-drive, then it should not be an issue. Not every working-line puppy will mature to have the extreme working drives of a few legendary dogs such as Mink, Fero, and Troll.
Past that the only other important thing will be her level of assumed dominance over things in her environment. I think that some careful selection with the aid of a good working-line breeder will give you what you (and your boy) want.
Good Luck,

I breed, train and raise working line dogs and have placed many in active homes as pets. First off your choice of a female is good as the male should not have a problem excepting her. If you are very active and have the time to train her you should have no problems. One of my high drive females who is also very dominant lives in the house as she has attached herself to my 8 year old boy. He has plenty of energy for her and she follows him around on his bike and goes wondering with him in the woods around the house. I get the peace of mind knowing she will protect him. Being that she is trained she listens very well to him.
Talk with the breeder, if they are honest, you should get a nice dog that will be as active as you and make a great companion for both you and your dog. Just remeber that training is the key to a well behaved dog.
