Do you pay membership fees to join a Schutzhund club? What are the averages of those?
Can you get their show rating and Korung in one shot? (same show...)
Do Schutzhund Clubs hold their own shows, or do you need to travel to one?
What are the average prices of entry fees?
Do you pay a handler to do your show rating or do it yourself?
Is a dog guaranteed to get a show rating first try? (assuming they don't bite the judge or whatever...)
Are you required to join the WDA or the USCA (I think thats right...) if you are going to title?
Been looking at a couple of dogs and am just exploring possibilities... I've always wanted to title/do sports with a dog.
Thanks in advance...

Do you pay membership fees to join a Schutzhund club? What are the averages of those? YES USA is about 100.00
Can you get their show rating and Korung in one shot? (same show...) YES But you must have your Sch1,BH,AD in order to show for the Korung
Do Schutzhund Clubs hold their own shows, or do you need to travel to one? Yes every club must hold a yearly trial or workshop at least. Some do and some dont do Comformation shows becuase they are a lot of work but comformation is not requirment.
What are the average prices of entry fees? 40 to 100 depending on location and trial and the title you show for the Korung is normaly closer to 160.00
Do you pay a handler to do your show rating or do it yourself? Up to you totaly most clubs work together and some times someone elce can showcase the dog better than the owner and some times not.
Is a dog guaranteed to get a show rating first try? (assuming they don't bite the judge or whatever...) they will get a rating as long as the dogs does not bite or show fear to gun fire( in certain age groups) but the rating given is based on the dog and what the judge gives
Are you required to join the WDA or the USCA (I think thats right...) if you are going to title? I think yes
Hope that helps some good luck to you in your search.

Malinda - thank you for your response, very helpful!
Mary - wow... luckily we have a club in town, and another just south of. Hopefully we won't have near that kind of mileage. :)
Alright, so the order goes - BH, AD, SchH, Koerung...
For the BH I read somewhere that the handler must also take a written test when putting their first BH on a dog? Is that correct? This being by USA rules, of course.
I would/will be the dogs primary handler and trainer, however I cannot ride a bike, plus I have back problems. Would I be able to get a friend or family member of mine to handle my dog for the AD and if so, would my friend have to join the club even though they don't own a dog?

Take in mind the AD is 12.5 miles........Who is going to get your dog into shape to do this up to the point you enter the AD... Of coursed Steve1 doesn't have to do that (no harm Steve - been discussed to death)......But ordinarily, a short marathon needs to be trained for - by man/woman and dog.......
You can't be in any worsed shape than me - I have had back surgery, I have herniated disc, I have broke both feet - my ankle, several fingers, I have had two a tumor removed/ hernia operation - and I am still training my dog........Sounds like I should be dead though.........But I still manage to train my own dog.........No excuses.
It takes over 2000 hours to train a dog to SchH Level - and that is if you know what you are doing.
There is no guarantee that you will even get the BH.... As well as if you are a first time handler - learning your skills is more of a battle than teaching the dog.. Fumbling with leashes, fumbling with food, learning to mark a behavior, learning not to trip over your dog - and lord help us not having to go back and retrain something cause you -as the handler- caused a issue in your dogs behavior/training.......
To put a cost or a time factor on it to me is impossible really.......... Yes, I think you need to join a club - cause with out that - you really don't have any guidance except the internet - and frankly that just don't get it - nor do watching a bunch of videos......
Yes you need to travel - clubs do put on trials - but not all the time when you are ready to trial your dog... Have dog - do schutzhund - will travel.................
It all adds up to lots of money - Schutzhund is a Sport and it by no means is cheap..............
But it is all worth it when you see your dog run those blinds, bark and hold, track down the field and prance down the field next to you with that head held up high...........and it only took X# of years............

I would definantly join a club, if/when I do get a dog. There are a couple around here. I have tons of free time too, so I don't think that is too much of an issue, its just getting there. And I am excited to see what challenges lay ahead of me, which is why I'm asking all of this. I also come from a family that loves any excuse for a roadtrip.
I know it is not going to be easy, but it is something I have always wanted to do.

Written test is required for first time BH handlers - it is on the USA website........If you start from a 8 week old pup - they cant get a bh until 15 months - 18 months for schH1, 19 months for 2 and schh3 20 months... so we are talking almost two years if you are humping it........
Good luck!
