I thought some of the members of the database would find this slideshow interesting. Many of the dogs working in SAR at the 9/11 site were purebreds (GSDs, Dobes, goldens and labs) but the first few shots of this slideshow show dogs that are obviously mutts.

Hurrah to their handlers, who likely rescued them from the pound...

I saw this the other day. It just almost makes you cry to see how amazing these dogs are.

I have a few buds that are K9 Officers for the Pentagon. One was considered a hero for his actions that day along with his dog. A number of those dogs sufferred PTSD and because they (dogs), were at ground zero, working non-stop for extended periods/hours some suffered medical problems, thus shortening their carreers and their lives. True heroes sadly missed. (I'll see if I can find his picture).

Someone told me all the dogs used at ground zero were euth. due to respitory issues. Very sad if true. I had a website about a monument aproved for militarty dogs. Gotta find it and start a thread. I thought I did gotta check.

This is an interesting article that goes in a bit more detail about Roselle, the Labrador Guide, and others.
