I have never heard someone say bluntly. I work in a financial environment and discussing money with a customer by phone she started to tell me how she makes extra money. I almost didnt catch what she said. She told me she normally makes extra money selling puppies and kittens. She seemed like a nice lady and due to at work I ignored the comment. But I have never had someone tell me they sell puppies and kittens for extra money. She didnt elaborate. I was wondering has anyone else had someone tell them they actually do it for money. At least she was honest but I wonder how many litters or both has she produced. Blame it on the economy. lol

If someone buys a titled female that has been bred and has it imported the first litter usually pays for the dog. If then this female becomes a pet, is not promoted and is bred on a 2-3 schedule...a little extra money can be made. average litter of 6 puppies and 3 litters in 2 years..with a cost of 1000 per pup. of course this assumes there are no health problems. Do the math........ There is nothing wrong with making a little extra money from selling puppies and kittens..(assuming the owner has done their homework and the breeding improve the breed). What is wrong is when the owner becomes greedy and becomes a puppy mill or kitten mill......

Actually yes I have!! She was a terrible GSD breeder that used her puppies to purchase things for her home! She bred her dog numerous times, and sold the puppies by 4-6wks so they were out the door and didn't cost her much money! Most puppies went to new homes by 6wks of age! Once while visiting her house she pointed out the new riding lawn mower her puppies bought her, the new carpeting throughout her home that puppies bought her! She made me crazy, she was a patient at the vet clinic I was working at many years ago. She ended up with a friend of mine's litter of puppies as they had to move to another state so this person whelped the litter of puppies and by 6-8wks they were vomiting after eating and not thriving well, she brought them in thinking they all had something wrong like Mega Esophogus, well we did a stool sample right away and the slide we looked at under the microscope was solid roundworm eggs!! We dewormed the puppies and sent her extra doses to give at home for the next dose in two weeks. She called to let us know that shortly after arriving home the puppies threw up golf sized balls of roundworms!!! Needless to say after that the puppies were able to eat and were gaining weight and growing. I ended up with two of these puppies since they belonged to my friend and not the puppy mill lady! I sold the pet puppy to a great home and the other I bought from this woman for $1000.00 just to get him away at 8mos of age! He had never left the property and drooled like a newfoundland when in the car! He unfortunatley died at 18mos of age from mesenteric volvulus or twisting of the intestines which the ER doctor said was most likely due to the damage the roundworms would have caused!

She knowingly bred to a dysplastic male that her son owned. I saw the male and he couldn't barely pull himself up off the floor! The puppies were not well bred, oversized, questionable health and temperament but she always had them sold quickly and that kept her going!! It made me angry every time she walked into the office because I had to be nice and couldn't tell her what I really thought of her and her dogs!!!

Luckily she has been out of breeding for many years now but unfortunatley she added lots of poor quality GSDs to the world!!

Sometimes, depending on who you're talking to, you might say that, assuming the person you're talking to wouldn't understand what you really do. For example, when talking to a financial person who was asking me if I EVER have ANY extra money coming in that wasn't regular, I mentioned that I occasionally breed and sometimes take dogs in for training. They were only interested in the $$, so I didn't elaborate on what the dogs are, what they're used for, what I spent on the dam (because I sure as hell am not making much money, lol). He just wanted to see if he could use that as a little "extra" income to push me into another category when trying to get a mortgage recently. He added "dog breeding" to my income. So, it may not be that she's the devil incarnate; she just may have been being brief for that particular reason. That might've been the 3rd time she'd gone through a similar process and just figured she knew what you wanted to hear.

Or, she could be a totally  uneducated, unethical hillbilly with tiny crates piled up 10 high. You just don't know.

Pretty much figure it happens all the time. Every doodle-dog born is just that, "extra money".

Sitasmom I have no problem with people making money in an avenue in life. But this lady was telling me about her part time jobs. The puppies and kittens were just for extra money. I dont believe she was testing but we didnt discuss. She is struggling to pay her mortgage and pays property taxes quarterly and the puppies and kittens pay for the taxes and her job pays for the mortgage. That is different. NO PROBLEM WITH BREEDERS MAKING MONEY

If you believe she is a "mill" have her checked out by the authorities and then let them decide. Then you can sleep at night.

Out here in the Texas, Panhandle, you can't sell a kitten or cat.  They are always on Craigslist for free.
Now puppies, that's a whole different scenario.  I augment my pension, by selling puppies like Hotcakes.  I have a "JUG" half Jack Russel, and half Pug.  She is wired on speed. I breed her to my Chihuahua every heat.  @$40, the pups go fast. Always have folks left out, because not enough pups.

I've got a Pit mix bitch, that throws some monsters, when bred to my black male. I sell these pups as pure Pits, and  can bring as much as $300.

I can breed my Shep males to a buckskin Pit bitch I have, and the pups look and act just like Mals. I sell these as Mals, for at least $300.

My Puppy sales allow us to always dine at BK, Mickey D's, Arbys, Taco Villa etc., on a daily basis.
Sometimes my legs get tired but, Peddlin is alive and well in The Panhandle.
I even let my woman order a Double Quarter Pounder, w Cheese "Extra" Value Meal.

I think most breed for various reasons other than improving the breed, most claim they breed to improve the breed but few indeed breed to improve the breed and a small percentage from the latter succeed in improving the breed. If I breed I will not claim I want to improve the breed, no fool would believe such a big claim on my part.
