Next Tuesday the New York Times will report on a stunning and most important discovery in genetics. This will contribute greatly to the understanding of genetics in general, including canine genetics. This discovery is the finding of a secondary genetic code which will explain the higher order functions of the genes such as turning certain genes on and off and when certain main genes should be activated developmentally. The science of genetics is moving extremely fast and it is especially advantageous for dog breeders that the same genetic principals which are valid for human genetics are valuable for canine genetics. This means that the billions of dollars now being spent on human gentics research is providing science directly useful to canine genetics and related diagnoses of canine diseases and their treatment. As I mentioned before a simple genetic cheek swab test is now available for the coat factor, a major breakthrough for fully informed breeding in and of itself.
