Hello everyone

Does anyone know of any breeders who focus their breeding program to produce dogs that excel in herding?  Or Breeders who have somewhat balenced litters in which some pups would be great candidates for a herding job while others would be more suited for SAR, or Schutzhund etc. (Not to exclude the super well rounded puppy who has potential in more than one area)

I know herding dogs aren't in as big a demand as they once were and not many kennels advertise their pups in this way so I thought I would ask.
I'm not asking for any devious reason, I'm just doing a little personal research. If for whatever reason you don't want to list a kennel name on the thread, I would appreciate a PM

Thanks bunches
Scarlet

Scarlet,
are you talking about Dutch Shepherds aka Hollandse Herders?
Where are you located?
This German breeder here offers most of his dogs since he is giving up breeding but his are x-Hollandse Herders. They have their own registry in the Netherlands.
www.hollandseherder-privat.de
This one here in North Germany breeds pure Hollandse Herders: www.herder-zucht.de
Lots of info and breeder references in Europe here: www.working-dog.eu/rasse-details/19/Dutch-Shepherd-Dog

Hi Scarlet,
I am so sorry I misread your post. When I read "herders" I thought of Hollandse Herders aka Dutch Shepherds. There I am from that is what is meant by Herders.
If you prefer GSDs (me too, of course) and want to do herding, you need to talk to Ulf Kintzel in New York : www.whitecloversheepfarm.com or Karen Priest at Traumhof GSDs: www.traumhofgsd.com. There are a couple of others who have titled Kirschental dogs in their program, like Michele in Canada: www.alpenhofgsd.ca and Julie in Michigan: www.24kgsd.com . I have never met or dealt with Ulf Kintzel but I do know the others and would always recommend them.
Chris
P.S. Thanks for the compliments on my dog. The photo in my avatar is my homebred girl Olympia at about 6 months old. She is now almost 3 years old and does not herd. She does hunt rabbits in full flight though and unfortunately catches them, lol.

I've been herding with several of my dogs and doing some AHBA herding competitions. I got into it because a friend of mine who trains Border Collies started herding with the GSD that she got from me, so I started getting herding lessons from her with a littermate of her dog.

I wouldn't say that I am making breeding decisions *for* herding at this time, but I sure do enjoy herding with my GSDs. And for them to still have the herding instincts and drives after all these generations says to me that breeding for schutzhund must select for some traits that are important in herding (that is, my dogs come from generations of dogs bred for work, with mostly schutzhund titles and/or police certifications--not with HGHs).

GSDVomInsel in So. Calif herds with her german shepherds;  trains, herds and competes in trails.  Love the dogs that can do it all.  Nan

I am making breeding decisions "for" herding characteristics, and not just for schutzhund.  I intend to breed Nickie von Ehret (AKC & AHBA titled) about a year from now to a schutzhund import of full DDR decent.  It's less significant that she's from a schutzhund and police ancestry, the fact being that her greatest talents lie in herding and tending.
