Question for the herding experts out there....
I know there's different types of herding, ie. tending vs gathering.
If my shepherd were taught the gathering method would we still be able to go for the HGH title?
Or are the methods too drastically different?
Thanks!

Hi. Are you still training with Shannon? I train with her and just switched from gathering to tending. They are two entirely different styles and tending is C course in AKC and the closest to HGH. My knowledge is extremely limited about herding so I am on a learning curve along with me dog. If we do well in C course then maybe HGH? Anyway, that's my plan. Talk to Shannon about the differences.

Dogs are very versitile, and I've never done the tending style (but would love to!) but if endeavoring to do both, the dog would probably have to learn one and then do the other,
not train them at the same time.
A tending breed like the GSD might be able to make the switch & do both, but the gathering breeds ie Border Collie, etc would have a hard time doing tending.
The trick is that tending takes a huge amount of property and livestock. Places and instructors to train with in the U.S. are limited.
Ulf would be able to tell you all you need to know. ;-)

You would not be able to go straight from gathering-style herding to tending-style without some additional training.
However, the control and commands and sheep knowledge gained in learning gathering style would be helpful as you moved into tending training.

Thanks Judy, ShadyLady, and BlackthornGSD!

I will be working with Shannon in about 2 weeks.
I'm really new to herding, so I wasn't quite sure about how to ask the right questions.
If Shannon also teaches the tending method, then I should be okay.
Once again, thanks for all your help!
