Sad stories about dogs that died from being left outdoors in the heat. Please, take the proper precautions to protect dogs from heat strokes.

Actually I was surprised to read about the Pug. I've never heard of that before. Does that sound plausible?!

Sad indeed
I had a man in Longview , two yrs ago, left one of my kids, tied to a post in back yard, and he came home from work at lunch , finding his dog dead.
He had fought hard to get loose from pole tied to , and his water bowl was turned over with not a drop.
Yes, he called me asking me stupid questions, like....I have no clue why Homer died...WOULD you ?
Anyway , no need to describe how I reacted
I have two baseball bats , that I would love to put into force action when things like this happen.
I guess that is the German blood or the IRISH blood in my background
HEAT is cause of many deaths in humans and animals..
THEY also lose appetite in this kind of heat we are having in TExas so you have to not worry about their diets shuting down a bit..
I try to give mine frozen chicken backs and some things to eat that are less heavy and I am having to dump and refill the water buckets two or three times a day right now....
THEY all put their head up to shoulders and their front feet in the buckets all day long. My water sours because I have well water with no chlorine in it...which I do not want chlorine in my water anyway...BUT makes a lot more diligence on keeping it fresh.
I do not use the over the head waterers becasue I have mostly heavy coated guys left now, and they mildew or stay wet around necks and fungi can start...
WHEN the guys and gals are loose in the property they are digging huge deep holes to find cool in the dirt.''
I have had no rain in three months..ONE or two showers lasting only 15 mins or less..
Trees are dying and my garden is gone...Well water will not sustain an nice garden with heat down to 90 at night and no cool down
I know cattlemen are also in trouble in TEXAS and OKLA and KANSAS> Talked to other members here who are having to stay in kennels in Kansas all day keeping the dogs cool.

RS,
Yes, completely plausible for just the reason stated in the article. Due to the extreme conformation of a pug's face/nose they are highly vulnerable to overheating and general respiratory distress in a much shorter time period than you'd expect.

We were advised on our SAR team to cut back on our dogs diets to slightly underweight or working trim conditions. Weight is an often overlooked factor in heat casualty prevention.
Keeping your dogs in the airconditioned inside has pros and cons. keeping your dog outside (with plenty of shade, shelter, and water) allows your dog to acclimate to the conditions and become more tolerant. Not recommended for certain breeds such as the pug. Also many people don't understand the sun moves through out the day. Where there might be shade in the morning may not be adequate shade come mid day.

One thing I did with my dog when he was in the kennel. I bought the mister fans and placed them where they blew across the kennels. The mister fan just added to there comfort. They learned to lay right out of the water but where the air was cooler. Now I live in Memphis Tn. We have a good bit of humidity here. I had many people tell me this would not work. Well being that I work in Sportsmedicine and have seen this work for athletes I had a good idea it would work for the kennel. It did very nicely and to see just how well it did use a thermometer to see how much. I would get a 10 -15 deg temp drop in the area that the mist and air went across. The kennel was covered so stayed shaded all day as well. I have moved since then and do not have this set up now so the dogs come in for the heat of the day and go out when it is appropriate.
