I may be watching a dog I bred for an extended period- several weeks to several months. I have no idea what to charge. Those of you who board, do you have different rates for long stays? Say, a weekly rate vs. a daily rate? I don't have a kennel, per se, so she'd be in my house most of the time, rotated in and out w/my own dogs. What is fair to charge to take on another dog for a longer period of time? I told the owner to get a few quotes and I'd beat the lowest; I am not looking to get rich and I'd love to have her, truthfully, but I have to be realistic and admit that another dog is a burden and is worth some financial consideration.
Any input is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey Jenni,
For a long term board we charge $5.00 a day plus they must provide food, meds. (when necessary) etc...
Shorter stays are $10.00 a day.
Any certified police K9, SAR dog, MWD etc... is $5.00 day regardless of the length of stay.

Hey Red Sable,
We're not a big kennel with only 6 runs.... 7X12 on concrete with 5' block walls and 5' 9 gauge chain link on top of that. The back fence is
9 gauge chain link and so far we have a roof on half. The other half stays shaded. We have one "escape proof" 9 gauge welded wire kennel
for the houdinis :)
I'm not out to make a killing as most of my clients are K9s, but we must be doing something right as they keep coming back.

I pay 20 dollars a day, plus $2 per day extra for daily exercise. Not sure if they make a better price for longer stays. They base it on the size of the dog, so if you have a smaller dog it would be less, a bigger dog, more. They will provide the food or you can provide your own (no difference in cost),
Cats, too, I believe were about $20/day, too. This kennel is also a breeder/training center and I think very professional. Of course everything costs more where I live. (Just heard we have the most expensive gas prices, except for Hawaii)
$5/day is unheard of around here, you guys are lucky!

Melissa, that is the lowest I have ever heard of ANYWHERE. Holy cow. Around here, it's around $20/day, and as Beetree said, exercise et al is extra.
This girl will be in my house, treated just like my own, walked, played with, taken to the park, etc.

They charge you extra for excersise???? I play ball with all the K9s and take a few for 4 wheeler runs because I like doing it. Most of the
ones we board here are house trained and will not potty in their kennels so they are walked a bunch and all get a bath before going home (if they stink, LOL)
It is a good thing to be well liked by some of the K9s that come through, LOL. Playing ball is a good activity. Of course I always have their handler's permission
to play with the K9s, but they are usually happy their buddy will get out and play.
Regular, non K9 clients have to pay for perks like baths but they all get out to play.

I board puppies from my program for No charge at all. I enjoy having them and feel it's a great "bonus" for all involved - I get to spend time with "my puppy" and the owner gets free boarding whenever they want. They bring enough food to last for the dogs' stay here, and so I'm not out any money from my pocket to keep them.
I do have long-term rates for regular boarders - weekly and monthly plus discounts for rescuers, rescued dogs, and military.

Jenn, I was out of town and boarded one female, because of her attitude and it was a nice place. they let dogs out 6 times a day in exercise pen. She charged 13.00 a day, and I furnished feed & health records. She was a k-9 handler at one time and very professional.

Melba, They don't give anything away, true, but for other reasons, I won't go anywhere else, they do take great care of the animals. I always pay $40 for the bath, too. It is so much nicer to pick up a clean, fluffy dog.
