I am seeking thoughts and/or ideas on starting up a food bank just for dogs, cats. The way I see things , there are a lot of people who having a tough times right now and some can't even afford food for their pets. I see food banks and a few emergency food outlets for people. Why not for pets too ?

Our local shelter did this for a time, you have to be careful as people will take advantage just to get free food.  I think the shelter asked for something as far as proof they need it?? Maybe a pay stub or something, not sure on that though.  I believe they did it once a month for a few months, had the same people there each time.  Not sure if it really stopped dogs/cats from getting turned into the shelter, doubtful. I know with our local shelter if someone came to drop off an animal and mentioned the only reason was not having money to feed him the shelter would definately give them food.  The other issue becomes vet costs etc. If the dog/cat needs medical help who will pay then?  Just be careful not to get scammed, so many people will take the food you worked so hard to fundraise for and not really need it.

I think this is why pet food banks / humane societies partner with human food banks (helps with distribution too).

Honorable idea - difficult execution...

I have an acquaintance that has money on Grande Latte and muffin at Starbacks everyday but she says she cannot afford to feed her dog... Her dog is getting sicker and sicker on a cheapest dog food in a grocery store but she will not spend additional $5 a month more to buy her better food. She’s fishing for free dog food from me for months now… (I'm feeding few dogs, so I wouldn't even notice the amount that her girl eats...)

In a town nearby – the local food bank had issues with the huge demand. So the board decided to talk to local farmers to get additional supply of fresh produce: fruits and vegetables.  All local farmers gave produce for free – only catch – somebody has to pick it up. So the food bank board made a requirement that people who sign up for food bank have to volunteer 8 hours a month to help to collect the food. Guess what – 85% drop out rate… This hit the local news last year.
