The puppy should be started by the time it is 6 months old... or it will have to be tested for heartworms before given any medication.
Here is where I order my heartworm medication. I use Heartgard Plus...

Many on here suggested I start the pup I have back at 8 weeks of age especially with me being in the south, regardless of my vet saying start at 6 months of age. So I did start him at 8 weeks, he's currently 14 weeks now.

There appears to be evolving evidence of existing Preventative Failure with respect to several resistant strains of Heartworms which first appeared in the months following Katrina aftermath.
This issue is Spreading North evidently.

We tell people to start at 8 weeks and if you have not started by 5 months then they need to start and then test in 6 months then yearly after that. We have had 2- 7 month old puppy's show positive for heartworms(the youngest we have seen), from what we are told it takes 4 months from the time the dog is bit by a mosquito to show up positive on a snap test. and your dog can be positive for heartworms and still not show positive for Microfilaria. we still have some Vets. that just look under the micro scope and never do a snap test in our town. and we always tell clients that it is cheaper to prevent then to cure.
