So, I know a bit about the Malinois. My family had a Groenendael when I was very, very young but I don't remember him.
I'm a trainer and I'm just getting into a position where, in the next few years, I'll be getting a couple (more) dogs. Probably more than one year, less than five. I've pretty much decided on a Standard Schnauzer or Airedale for my next one, but I do still have plenty of time for research, and there's always the one after that.
Most of what I do is basic and advanced obedience with some minor problem solving (barking, digging, pulling, growling with no bite history). I want to expand into schutzhund.
I am interested in the Laekenois, the Turvuren, and the Groenendael. I think they're attractive and I prefer long- or wire-haired dogs. I like drivey, high energy dogs, too.
What are these guys like? How do they compare to a Mali?

Hi,
I've had German Shepherds all my life. Two years ago, we bought a Belgian Groenendael from de Lescaut kennel. This kennel focuses on working ability and is well known for his versatile, high prey drive dogs.
I would say there is no difference between our Groenendael and Malinois in terms of temperament. However, I think that a lot of Groenendael breeders focuses on beauty and plush coat. So you gotta be careful when choosing one. I would recommend de Lescaut kennel if you plan on doing schutzhund.

That is a seriously awesome dog! I covet her!
That's just what I'm looking for, if I go that route.
Anyone with Turves or Laeks?

If you are looking to do sport work with a Terv in the US I would contact Denise Fenzi for info etc: http://www.spritebelgians.com/

You ask how they compare so I'll give you my .02, if you want a Porsche, why buy a Volkswagen? There are reasons why you don't see very many representatives of the other 3 members of the Belgian Sheepdog family competing in the biting sports or working in the streets or on the fields of battle. In the conformation ring, in the obedience ring and on the agility course yes, but biting sports very few. Nerve issues are usually the culprit when comparing the Sheepdog varieties in a sport like SchH where great emphasis is placed on full, calm grips. If you look at the entry each year at the FMBB (Federation Mondiale Berger Belges or World Belgian Sheepdog Association), you will find the IPO is dominated 99.9% by the Malinois. Usually an honorary entry of one Tervuren and one Groenendael is allowed but as a rule is of no consequence. The obedience and agility portions of the Championship are open to all of the varieties but the IPO is almost exclusive to the Malinois. There are reasons.
