I went to visit my folks this weekend (Leamington, Ontario) and the black flies were beyond terrible! I could barely even see Senta since she was engulfed in a cloud of hungry flies.
I searched the archives and here are the fly repellents that folks recommended in the past. Is there any new product on the market that I should be aware of? I'll be visiting my folks often this summer to spend time with my dad (his cancer is far along). Senta loves to swim in Lake Erie so it would be ideal if the product was waterproof.

- UltraShield / UltraShield Ex- spray (Made with natural Pyrethrins from chrysanthemums, Permethrin and Piperonyl Butoxide) (http://www.absorbine.com/products/flycontrol/ultrashield-ex-insecticide-repellent)
-
DuraGuard – spray. Is this really waterproof?

-
Flys-Off – ointment and mist or aerosol
(http://farnampet.com/products.php?cmd=listcat&maincat=Dog&key=300031&cat=Fly+Control+Products) - Bronco – spray (http://farnamhorse.com/product.php?catmain=&mainkey=&pid=100013&key=bronco&cat=)
-
SWAT Fly Repellent Ointment –many recommendations on the forum- available in pink and clear
(http://www.farnamhorse.com/product.php?pid=100029)
-
Fly Away – spray, wipes, roll-on (http://www.flyaway.ltd.uk/)
-
Vaseline mixed with citronella oil
-
Freedom 45 Spot On – liquid with applicator- it looks like only the horse product repels flies
(http://www.starhorseproducts.com/STRK11603FRDM45SS4horse.pdf)
-
Rio Vista Coat so Soft- spray (Rosemary, Chamomile and Comfrey extracts)
- "You Tick Me Off" from Faerhaven (Harrow, Ontario)- roll-on- I tried this on the weekend; it smells great but does not repel flies at all.

Hi Laura,
I have used all of those produces on my horses and none of them worked worth a darn.
I currently use Pyranha (yellow bottle) and it works great on a broad spectrum of insects.
Have not tried it on my dogs so not sure how it would work on them.
It is oil based, so lasts a long time on the coat as well.
Here some links to get you started: http://www.americanlivestock.com/m-787306-pyranha.aspx
or http://www.horse.com/item/pyranha-wipe-n-spray/SLT310725/
Also, have a friend who trains horses and she and she likes to use just plain Vaseline on the tender areas.
She says it works great on keeping the flies and gnats away. Apparently they do not like to walk in the sticky Vaseline.
Hope this helps........Good luck....

Thanks for the suggestion. I can see why Pyranha is effective - it has a higher concentration of piperonyl butoxide and contains butoxypolypropylene glycol (another insecticide, not all of the above products contain this). I'll probably try one of the other less concentrated products first and use this as a last resort since I'm pretty sensitive (which is why I'm no longer a chemist).
Toxnet (http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/) (which contains the HSDB, among other chemical databases) is an excellent resource if you have questions about chemicals. Sorry- I couldn't resist sharing. :)

Hi Laura,
I use the UltraSheild EX product.
I love it! Not sure if it's waterproof though.

Funny you would post this thread because I have been having a heck of a time finding something to keep the horses, fly free this year...The flies are bad and they bite!!!!
All the products that have been mentioned have worked for us in the past, but this year it seems to be a real challenge to find something that works....Ultra Sheild has been about the best I have used in the past...Might have to go get some again....
Deanna...: )
