Has anyone else been surprised by the reaction of an Owner when you have found their roaming or lost dog?
On average, (over the years) 8/10 calmly say: "Oh, he/she got out of the back gate". Or, "We wondered where he had gone".
Personally, I would be frantic, and delighted (to put it mildly) that my dog was found safe, and reunited with me.

I have a stray dog pound in UK and the number of people who thank me for getting their dog back to them safely are far outnmbered by the ones who are angry at having to come and collect it and pay a fee. According to them, the dog warden stole it out of their garden (even though the dog warden is on holiday!) , everyone knows its their dog so it isn't a stray, they washed the dog (which is dirty, smelly and not seen a brush for months) and forgot to put its collar back on, washed the COLLAR and forgot to put it back on, shouldn't pay because it is microchipped (but no id tag that a finder could read) , dog would have gone home by itself if people left it alone (probably true provided it didn't cause a multi car pile up on the way and end up a tangled mass of blood and hair on the road), someone opened the gate and let the dog out (taken them over 24 hours to notice), dog got out during a burglary (but they have no crime number) and so on and so forth. Then you get the really stroppy ones and I have to call the police.

i have reunited many lost dogs with their owners....
the most memoribe
2 german short haired pointers (one old and toothless the other maybe 10 months)
the dog escaping during a thunder storm, they were found and then escaped again, i found them when they came up to my property and i put posters up in a 10 mile radius. a week later the owner called. the dogs were 75 miles from home and the owners were frantic to get them back. even though i didnt ask, they insisted i take 100 for the care and feeding......the dogs were so happy to see their owners.....i felt good.
the other
a GSD walked up from nowhere at a Sears parking lot, he was skin and bones and was scraped and cut all over. He was afraid of his own shadow. we took him in and again posted for a 10 mile radius...i worked with him and he was learning basic OB and becoming confident... after a 15 days his frantic owner came to get him. He cowerd and pissed himself......they had photos and vet documents.........i felt very bad.

SitasMom, This second account with a lost dog, would have made me (like you) feel sick with worry. I hope that whatever the situation may have been, that it would have improved, perhaps the Owners would receive help and guidance. (At least they must have cared, being "frantic", and came to collect him). Or this dog was re-homed to a good and more appropriate home.
Did you ever hear back from them?
