Our male loves to sleep on the tile floor rather than the area rugs or the dog beds, so he has pretty big calluses on his elbows that are quite irritated and sore right now. He is a coated dog and the hair in the elbow area is very long, so the recommendations I've found online of using vaseline and other ointments will be a mess. If I have to I'll cut the hair, but I'd like to avoid doing that if possible. I am hoping for some tips from the folks on the board.
Thank you,
Char

While you are home you COULD try vet tape or some kind of human elbow wrap;  I also (just yesterday) tried a human diaper rash ointment which dries pretty quickly but have not used it enough to see if it is going to help my boy.  I thought this might give some soreness  comfort also,  but will see.  will let you know, my boy is licking his elbows so know they hurt.  Rough and red and one has like a star shaped open area that looks kind of raw.  Wanted something that would kind of protect the skin.  Will let you know.  I would wrap when you are watching.  BOL  Nan

In Germany we used "Ballistol" ointment for elbows and pads, in North America K9KlearUp is recommended by many. I also would recommend a Kuranda dog bed to make sure your dog's elbows stay safe (www.kuranda.com)

All my dogs have elbow calluses.  I used triple antibiotic cream with  a painkiller (not ointment since the cream soaks in pretty quickly and doesn't make a mess) when their elbows got sore.  I could never keep them on their beds or pads.  Loki would either pull it out of his favorite spot or destroy it so I gave up.  I will have to try some of the recommendations since I could never make the calluses go away.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Nan, Please let me know in a few weeks how the product you are using is working.

Tingiesandtails, I would get him a Kuranda bed if he'd lie down on it! We've got 4 good quality orthopedic beds in the house, but he prefers the floor most of the time. I'll look into the product you recommended. Does it dry real well?

I have used bag balm in the past but is mostly Vaseline based, so messy. Also, a horse product called Corona ointment...but again, quite messy. What works super well on the irritated and inflamed calluses, try Vetericyn spray gel...I get the veterinary formula which is 4 times stronger from my vet, but you can get the regular formula at the feed store...it is absolutely amazing stuff! Virtually heals before your eyes! The spray hydrogel is thicker jelly like and is easy to work in through hair and yet doesn't drip right off like a regular spray. Just shake well before you use it. Also, it doesn't sting at all and the dogs don't fight putting it on. It works great...give it a try!

I've used a little mineral oil to soften them up

Yes I have tried Vetersyn (SP??) on other stuff, is amazing;  have not tried on elbow calouses though, will do that and it should help to keep them clean.    Thx  Nan

what do you use to wash your floors and do you go back with plain water to rinse them after washing?

my dogs prefer to lay on our tile floors and we're not having a such problems.
