Hi,
I recently had a post on PDB about my dog being treated for tick fever & how he suddenly fell down during a running session. My vet said that the treatment for tick fever should be repeated & not to excercise the dog & also get an x-ray done for his hips. Besides that she recommended putting my dog on good multi-vitamin. My question here is, do the human/human grade multi-vitamins be given to dogs or should they be animal grade only?

I have always given my dogs human grade vitamins but in this case I think you should find out exactly what nutrients your vet thinks your dog needs.

We have used Hokamix and Vertex for over 13 years and have wonderful success with it. When I bought my female shepherd (who is now almost 15 and amazing the vet with her health) the breeder provided me with 19 pages of testimonials about all the things which it can help with. Some K9 units in Germany use it with their dogs if the hips are not perfect and get many year of service from them. Hope this helps you.

no - human grade vitamins are not recommended for dogs and cats because they contain too high amounts of individual vitamins. I also used Hokamix in Germany at one point but it didn't change anything just made the dog's pee flurescent....also remember that premium dog food already contains high levels of vitamins. If stored in a dry dark place they last for about 2 years.
Almost all animals can produce vitamin C themselves and overdosing vitamins and minerals can lead to severe kidney damage.

I am a big believer in fish oil pills, esoecially for joint problems. And yes I use the human grade ones. One of my girls I lost last year to cancer--Sadie--had unilateral dysplasia and I think the fish oil really helped her. The guys I have now are all younger and none have any joint problems at this time--good hips and all that but I give them one everyday anyway.
