Take a good look at the face accompanying this article. It is the face of a man who believes a reasonable way to discipline a family pet for leaving the yard is to drop-kick it, as though it were a football.
The man, Daniel Vargus, 26, was attested by Suffolk County police for beating and abusing his 6-month-old boxer puppy. He has been charged with one count of aggravated animal cruelty.
In a report, Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross wrote:
Vargus admitted to 'drop kicking' the puppy and then after it slid approximately 10 feet across the ground, he chased it down and began beating it again.
A passerby who observed the abuse called police, who viewed video surveillance from a nearby business and found the incident had been captured on camera.
Vargus’s defense for his actions is that the puppy managed to get out of the yard at about 9 a.m. yesterday while the man was shaving. Fortunately, the puppy, named James, suffered no major injuries and is in good hands now that Vargus signed over the rights of ownership to the SPCA.
Vargus himself had adopted the purebred boxer, though he declined to say from where. It would behoove local police to investigate since clearly the source is lax in its intake sessions with prospective owners.
"This dog now needs a third chance," Chief Gross is reported as having said, adding that anyone interested in adopting the dog can contact the SPCA at 631-382-7722. James is not yet available for adoption, but it is never too soon to inquire.
As for James’ former caretaker, he faces up to two years in prison. Aggravated animal cruelty is a felony. In the meantime, Vargus is being held on $10,000 cash bail and is due back in court on June 14.
