So, this tick was on one of my puppies earlier!!  Anyone know what kind of tick this is? I've seen one of these, one time when I was little, and I accidentally stepped on it and blood shot everywhere.  The big dogs went behind the trees in the back yard, and I assume, one of them got onto Sierra while they were back there....and then it got off on a puppy.  I didn't know he had it on him until I picked him up earlier, and then I saw blood on my hand and the tick fell off. I don't think he was on the puppy very long, and I don't think he ever bit into the puppy. It's about the size of a penny around. It does have some creases, or lines indented into it, but it may have been pressed against something.  I know they get really big, but does anyone know what kind of tick this is?

Here is the "little guy" it was on. A puppy we're probably going to train and keep.  Not the best picture of him, this was from last night, he was kind of sleepy here.

Looks like it fed on the pup for a while.

heiko, I had picked the puppy up literally 30 minutes before that, so it couldn't have been on him for too long. Either way, I killed the tick after I took that picture. That puppy stays in the house though, and I had let him and the big dogs outside to use the bathroom.  I let them come back in a few minutes later....picked him up again to pet him a little bit after, just to get him more use to being handled....and there was the tick.  It wasn't on him before he was let outside though.

Ok wasn't aware of that, do bloated/fed ticks re-attach to other dogs? I guess you could show it to your vet and see what he says.

To be that bloated the tick had to be on the dog for several hours. Once they get that big it's hard to tell which type of tick it is. They all look the same once they're that big.

CrashKerry read my posts again, that tick was not on the puppy 30 minutes before that.  There is no way he was on that specific puppy for hours....maybe on another dog, but not that puppy.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that is a deer tick, by looking at the legs. The largeness is only due to being filled with blood and not to start an argument but to be that large or "engorged" with blood would take days maybe even longer. I have three GSDs and unfortunately ticks are plentiful on the farm. My GSDs want to be "nice" crappers so they want to hit the woods to go to the bathroom. Probably around four/five types of ticks around here, (Talbot County, MD)

I usually kill them or I'll  keep a  few of them in a jar to analyze them. Ticks can feed on numerous hosts, even birds. They don't just feed on one host for life. They can attach, drop off and reattach. Those lines are just indentations and could be from anything. Being pressed against something or even laid upon/on.

What's funny or weird, (I was going to ask this a while back, just figured it was weird and most wouldn't notice this) but my two adults, the 10 month old doesn't do it. But if I hold a tick for the adults to sniff/smell a reaction takes place. It comes from their mouth not their nose but they will "dribble" and it's a lot. At first just a few drops then it's like you just turned the faucet on a little stream. And the adults know that there not good. If one is on the floor in the house, especially a fat one they will kill it by stomping/pawing it to death. Guess they know where the pain comes from???
 Funny but weird.

I DON'T THINK IT IS A DEER TICK, THE LEGS LOOK TOO BIG.
