K-9 Officer starved dog to death

WAREHAM (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A former MBTA K-9 police officer was sentenced to serve 18 months in jail for felony animal cruelty.

43-year-old Antonio Carneiro of Rochester was also given 20 years of probation during a hearing Tuesday at Wareham District Court.

In Febuarary, 2009 Carneiro was accused of starving his dog, Nitro, a six-year-old Belgian Malinois to death in an outdoor cage at his County Rd. home. The dog weighed only 25 pounds and a necropsy indicated that it may have suffered for months.

Rochester Police chief Paul Magee helped to investigate the case.
Magee told FOX 25, "How could a K-9 officer allow this to happen to his animal?"

Carniero was fired by the MBTA in 2009.

He will serve his sentence at the Plymouth House of Corrections.

God, I feel sick,  really, really sick.  Why did the neighbors not come forth??  IHP. 

Jail is too good for the sick bastart.  They should starve him then shoot him.

Yet the Florida K9 officer that kicked his canine to death during training was declared not guilty and he expects to be rehired-hopefully he will be prevented from returning to the K9 department.

As a retired police K9 handler I find this disgusting to say the least.  I would be looking also to charge the rest of the adults in the household where this happened because they had to know.  As far as the Fla. Officer, he does not need to wear a badge at the very least, too bad he did not get jail time.  Police K9's are considered the same as Officers so in effect he assaulted a fellow officer which I gather resulted in his death.  I would also look at the Officer's that witnessed this and allowed it to happen.  Descipline is one thing but abuse is another and kicking is abuse.

I believe that anyone capable of allowing an animal to languish in complete distress like that, is void of a conscience and a soul. There is no doubt, Carniero is diseased in the brain. Glad that he was relieved of his duties.
