Anyone interested in the availability of testing their GSD for carrying the long-coat factor can check the new VDC website for GSDs:
www.vetdnacenter.com/canine-long-hair-test.htm
They will send out 4 cheek swabs which you rub inside your dog's upper lip and return them with the required $58 lab fee. I just used this DNA test on my GSD female and received the test results back promptly by e-mail and regular mail in 10 days.
This is just one more type of valuable information which can be used to make better, informed breeding decisions. Since my female's test revealed that she does not carry the factor, this allows me to breed her to a stud dog which could or does, and I still won't get any long-coated puppies, which are not desired in my breeding plan.
