Acording to 3 of the vets I know and trust in my community, heartworm is now the most-often seen threat to the lives of dogs in Northern California, year round, even for so-called "indoor pets." Please remember to administer heart worm preventative if you live in this area.

Yeah, I know. Its poison, but a low dose of preventative is a LOT better than what a dog has to go through, possibly dying in the process, undergoing treatment for the disease. It only takes ONE mosquito bite to transmit the disease. We irrigate crops in this region. where there is water, there are mosquitos... for miles. Living in a developed neighborhood (read: asphalt jungle) does not reduce the danger.

I know one person who will protest and try to cite all kinds of stuff from UCD once published on the internet, all YEARS out of date, but hopefully the rest of you will listen up and protect your dogs, as I do. Nothing stays the same, especially when it comes to the spread of disease.

I am told Lepto is now an issue here as well.
Infovax-10 vaccine reccommended for the local strains.

Some may want to look at the website Beaglesunlimted.com and see the heartworm prevention and other related info.

I just had Pharaoh tested for Heartworm.  He has been consistently on Heartguard Plus, but it has been a long time since he was tested.  A friend who lives near me just got the bad news that her dog was positive for heartworm.

VIP Pet Services is in No California.  They have a mobile team that travels on a regular schedule on Saturdays and Sundays.

They have a deal where you buy a year's worth of preventive (your choice) and they throw in a free heartworm test.

It is possible to get it a bit cheaper online, but I paid 80.00 and got a twelve month supply of brown 50-100 pound Heartguard plus and a lab test included and no office visit.

They will also do rabies testing and certificates.
