I have a question for all of you that do progesterone tests on your dogs. I am wondering if anyone has had this happen?  Ok, Bitch came into heat May 10th. First progesterone test done on day 7  was 1.4ng, second test done on day 9 was 0.8ng, I am going of another test tomorrow which will be day 11 and will post back what the results are. I have never had a bitchs level drop, the vet said they see it sometimes and I am wondering if it was a lab error..

I know I didn't miss the heat. I always thought progesterone continues to rise, not fall during the heat, even if I missed her the levels should be high..

Mary, You have a point, I really hope that is not the case..fingers crossed and we will see what the level is tomorrow..my repro vet said its not unusual for some dogs to do this before the LH rise...

I have also had a female ---- 1st prog = 1nmol/ ------
2nd test = 2nmol/ -------
3rd test =  < 1 nmol/
I didn't repeat the test until  7 days later when her result was 38nmol/ .
She went to the stud that same day and 9 weeks later delivered 8 healthy puppies.

Good luck hope you get some puppies.

I had a drop in level once, it wa a lab error. It would be great if you could have another test done, And even better if you had a reliable male around who could let you know for sure. That's how I knew something was wrong with the test. My old male is always right on the mark. Good luck, Theresa

yea, i do believe a male is your best way to know, i have two test done and did not show  much of a rise it was .8 day 12 ,1.2 15 days so i waited a few days went to the stud and by the 2nd day  ( day 19 )there she was standing like a rock. so come late june well will see if we get pups.

i am trusting my male from now on, i did not have a male around this time.

good luck

Did a progesterone test on my lab, cause this is her last litter.
On a Monday she was 2.0 and 5 days later on Saturday she was 18, she was bred that Saturday,

here's how that turned out!

I google about the test & the numbers, and they said when it reaches 18 breed that day, I was breeding her then afterwards going to the vet & having her blood drawn that same day.

My understanding is that it will rise and fall until it gets above 2--and that can easily not happen until Day 10 or 12 or later in the cycle.

Once the level reaches 5, then the signal to ovulate occurs and the eggs are released. 48 hours after ovulation, the eggs are ready to be fertilized.

Once the level reaches 5, it tends to surge and stay quite high until as much as 8 weeks later. When the progesterone starts to drop, the bitch will go into labor (or, if it's too soon, she will lose the pups).

Thank you all for your responses. I am taking her in again this morning and will have an answer first thing tomorrow. My stud is not interested in her, he sniffs, flirts and walks away, she is also not standing for him. Will let you all know what the read is in the morning. OH, that is a beautiful litter of labs Mirasmom! Thanks again everyone!
