Well it now seems that Lilly our 5 month old Pitbull is having on again off again spurts of diheria and transitions between hard stools.

My husband and I had a fecal done on her about a week ago and a Giardia snap test, both of which were negative.

She's currently eating Blue Buffalo Lamb and Oatmeal puppy chow formula. So my question is if there is any way to firm up her stool or maybe I should switch her to a different formula?

thanks

What were you on before? Did you switch to this gradually? How long has it been eating this? Are you feeding too much? Did it get into anything else?

I have NO idea what she was on before, we adopted her from the Humane Society on April 16th, so no, I would imagine they were NOT feeding her Blue Buffalo.

No she hasn't gotten into anything else, my husband drives an 18wheeler and we ride everywhere with him, so she has been watched constantly.

She has been on the Blue Buffalo since April 16th when we picked her up.

She is lean and you can see ribs on her, but she is not emaciated, so no, I would imagine portion isn't the problem.

Thanks for your help Chaz

I feed Blue too.  When I feed too much, there are loose stools.  I would cut back, I know that is hard to do, when you think they are thin.  When I cut back the stools are just fine.   Same for adults.  Give it a try.

Well even if she is underweight, you can still overfeed. People see an underweight dog and they think that huge amounts of food at once will solve the problem. If you were underweight, what do you think eating multiple portions in one sitting is going to do? Is the dog very active? Maybe a higher protein food like B.B. Wilderness would be better.

The pup was probably on a cheap food with mostly filler, too. Now it is on a rich diet where the dog doesn't need as much.

Lilly is VERY mellow, a total couch potato, not active in the least.

She weighs about 40lbs and I feed 2 1/2 cups a day.

I agree, because of the fact that all the food at the Humane Society is donated, she hasn't had a regular diet since they picked her up at 5wks old. I also agree with the fact that the food she was eating, apart from rarely being  the same brand of food, was also probably cheap because it was all donated.

Her coat is shiny as can be, eyes are bright, ears are clean, healthy pink gums, and most times it's a firm stool, but once in a while, she gets a bit runny.

Drake had a problem with loose stool on Blue Buffalo Adult.  It was weird because is was also intermittent, every 4 or 5 days.  I switched him to Orijen, then Acana and have no problem on those.  I think it's an individual dog issue as many feed BB with no problems, but there's evidently something that just doesn't agree with some dogs.  It's whatever works for your particular dog, as long as it's good quality.

Thanks GSDTravels and everyone else that answered.

I actually picked up Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy formula, when she runs out of the current Blue Buffalo Lamb and Oatmeal puppy chow.

It's a different formula, instead of Lamb and Oatmeal, it's made with Chicken and Brown Rice, I believe.

We'll see if maybe just a different fomula might help???

PS:  you can add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin;  of course get the plain pumpkin;  a little each feeding per day will help the loose stool;  if it continues i would probably give her a 3-5 day panacur dose even though the snap test/fecal came out negative;  that can happen in cases and hide giardia, coccida and whip worm.  Nan
