Hi Roy I only give our young dogs about 2 mile road work three times per week the rest of the time playing with the ball over the field for a bit just rember not to much exercise untill the hips have developed in uk we get the hips done at 12 months so after the score comes back and is good we give a little more exercise and increse it as the pup gets older good luck with him hope this helps

Now that summer is here for us in the northern hemisphere, an excellent form of exercise is swimming, if this is easily available. One (1) caveat-if this is a male puppy, then swimming is fine, but if it is a female puppy, care must be taken that she not be allowed to swim just before, during, and just after the heat cycles. All of that said, short walks are fine, as is medium exercise. No hard running and jumping from elevated surfaces. Playing with a bite tug is fine, as is some retrieve work if the distance is not too great. Bob-O

I would absolutely disagree with shostring - two miles three times a week is far too roadwork much for an 8 month pup. From about 6 or 7 months our pups are given about a half mile walking on the road without attraction for firming. They get free running of about the same distance. Both twice a week with light training at the ring club and less if have attended a show. After 12 months build to 3 or four miles a day with lots of free running.

just some input -- work your dog up slowly ,if you have pavement let the pads get firm on it's aws slowly , don't try 2 miles /1 mile all at once ..build stamina and endurance and pending your climate watch HEAT / heat stroke and heat exhaustion .. in my area 5 min is about enough for my adult GSDs -- great advise about the swimming -- beleive me invest in a doggie life jacket -- i have a friend whose $5000 shepehrd drowned -- he caboed 1 mile everyday --one day they were out the dog drowned ?? cramp ?? didn't get the story and keep yopu dog away from motor boats --2 yrs ago another friend had a champion sled pulling dog --- --her dog fell overboard , got sucked into her boat propeller -- you can picture the rest .. and it was a small lake boat !! whatever you do use judgement and use common sense in regard to what you do

I also disagree with the running thing, until growth plates close (about 14mos...) no puppy should have its bones and joints subjected to strenuous and hard jumping, running, pounding pavement... Swimming, walking, close toy play and short retrieving games (2 toys)is fine and will help to burn energy and make strong puppies All agility work is done at ground level and/or below elbow ...... Be sensible, these are babies with bones that are growing....

Running a pup two miles three times a week is really excessive and just asking for trouble later on. DKiah has already explained why.
