The female I just bought will be a year old in a few days. I was told she weighed 65 lbs. Turns out she weighs only 53 lbs, and she isn't undernourished, just small. Is this considered undersized? I didn't buy her from a breeder, but a private party who adverised on this board.

Maybe its a cross between a GSD and a Chihuahua ;-)

No this is not undersized. The standard states that females should weigh between 22 and 32 Kg (48.4-70 lbs). The complete standard is available on USA's web site; www.Germanshepherddog.com

not necessarily undersized, but on the small side of the standard. When they are small, they can be very fast, quick, agile, and last longer without injury -

I have to say she is fiesty for her size. She keeps right up with my 100 lb. male chasing a ball and isn't afraid to snatch it away from him. I just didn't think shepherds came small enough to carry aroun in my purse ;-)

That must be one heck of a sturdy purse you've got! Seriously though, assuming you are in the US, I can see where you would think your pup would be undersized. For some reason, people over here seem to think that shepherds are supposed to be very large dogs, and many of the US lines are oversized.

One other thing, she seems to be favoring one of her hind legs. Hopefully it's just growing pains or perhaps a rough plane ride. And yes, I am in the US. I suppoes I am just used to having shepherds that are oversized as none of them have been less than 100 lbs.

you amy have a very nice GSD --- first growth hormone up to adult determines the size of your dog ---as well as the genetics from the parentrs -- secondly -- most of the people in sport world desrire more so the smaller in standard dogs as one has previously stated they are much more faster -- therefore entry to bite is fast and quick / more agile , better for agitlity in biting and harder for the helper[decoy ] to evade the attack [ much diiferent than Sch sleeve bite] , and for [police work they casn get into smaller spacers than the big boned GSDs -- -- lastly , there is a difference in small standard vs pituitary dwarfism which is present in the GSD breed too !! --

100+ lb GSD are either oversized for the standard, or overweight. Males at the very top of the standard and large-boned, such as mine - are 95 lbs tops - and that is a very big GSD. I prefer medium sized dogs for the work - females 60-65, males 75-85. molly

One of the best females we ever saw was around 55 pounds. She was so quick and agile. I will be happy if our one female stays at the 60 pounds she is now.
