PA K9

by PA K9 on 22 April 2011 - 22:04

Hi Everybody,   Several months ago I shared a police K-9 slide show from the Pennsylvania Police Canine Association (PPCA) 2010 Spring Certifications.  The video has taken forever to put together, but it's now finally up.   Please understand that I am NOT holding this up as some kind of stellar working dog performance.  I am just a civilian who trains and competes with this group (I've also done some schutzhund, as well).  I don't consider myself to be anywhere near the level of many of you who have gone to regionals or nationals, putting multiple titles on multiple dogs.   For those of you who have this kind of experience, I want to offer the following disclaimers:     1.  The dog was 8 years old at the time, somewhat out of shape, due to minor leg issue, so you're not exactly going to see him perform like a KNPV dog 2.  The dog does not have a ton of prey drive to begin with 3.  The guard is not especially good--he is very handler dependent 4.  You might think, "I sure hope a street dog has to do a whole lot more than this before he starts working the streets."  Yes, I agree.  Most K-9 trials aren't street scenarios. 5.  The camera had a severe malfunction where it magically lost the parts where we screwed up ;-) such as the Escort (dog does it well in practice though) 6.  Hopefully EVERYBODY will like the Call Off--that's something I am definitely proud of     Just wanted to share this for fun.   Thanks,   Scott (and Toby)

Vonissk--thanks!  The majority are training in Hazelton, but there are some members down here in southeastern PA as well.  Our certifications are held in the Reading area.  This video was actually from last year's certs in Spring 2010.  Our 2011 Spring Certifications will be in about a month.  Hank is still going strong!  PM me if you want me to tell him that you said hello.

Dawulf--thank you also.  Yes, one of the advantages of not having a "prey monster" is the call offs and outs are usually very good.  My next dog is most likely going to be Slovak, so it will be an interesting contrast to what I have now.

Thanks Again,

Scott

Bhall--Thank you very much--this means a lot coming from you, as your posts indicate you know a lot about working dogs.  I enjoy reading them.

ciara1--Thank you as well.

BTW--In all my "disclaiimers" I forgot to mention a lot of this dog's strengths:

1.  He is usually quite civil in the protection work, although this particular video doesn't really show it.
2.  His grips have always been full with deep bites
3.  He has very good on/off civil aggression and is pretty clear in the head.
4.  VERY social off the field (This is a trait that is VERY important to me personally--but I understand not every dog should or has to be like this.)

Thanks,

Scott

Why is your next dog gonna be Slovak? I'm Slovak ,I live in Poconos and looking for some good club for dog training close by.

kazan76--I have always loved DDR and Czech dogs (even though my current dog isn't) but in recent years even the Czech border patrol bloodlines really aren't what they used to be.  Most police K-9 importers I know are having to travel to Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary to evalutate suitalbe dogs.  (I do realize there are tons of expceptions to this, so I don't mean to start a whole bloodline argument thread--there are A LOT of great, great Czech dogs and I would take one in a second.)  It's just that I have been exposed to many Slovak dogs and they have really impressed me.

I'm not sure what your dog training experience is or what your goals are.  It is a VERY long road for a civilian to reach the point where they are training in police K-9.  That road starts with schutzhund.  If this is your goal, I would definitely find a club in the Northeastern Region on the Schutzhund USA website.

If you just want to bond with your dog and train him in obedience (certainly nothing wrong with that) perhaps some of the other members on this board who live in that section of Pennsylvania could help you.

Good luck with whatever you do!

So. . . hundreds of views and only 5 replies thus far.  Interesting. . .   I've got to start brushing up on Panda Shepherds and Shepa-doodles--that subject would surely bring in replies by the thousands.   Hold on. . . I got it:  "Panda Shepherd Police K-9 Video"  I'm gonna grab some white, brown, and black paint, and starting getting to work.   Scott
