I was planning on sending these to the SV.  Position doesn't look great, but the dog was not sedated.  Vet said it was as good as it gets.

Vet forgot to expose on the xray my name and the dogs DOB.  I've been trying to call UScA to see if this is okay.  Does anyone know?

dont think these are passing hips , how old is your dog??

by Nans gsd on 22 April 2011 - 16:04

Moderate dysplasia;  sockets not deep enough with some remodeling on the left hip (right side of the screen).  If you are not happy with these x-rays; have your vet re take them.  This is the future or NOT of your dog.

Get a better positioning.  It may make a difference.

I was affraid he'd look bad, especially that left hip.  Through I'm not surprised, his brother is Mild dysplastic, and 2 half brothers (same father) are dysplastic. I wanted to see this dogs hips after I swam him and gave him glucosamine/chondroitin and vit C.  I dont see any significant improvement after 6 months.

Nans you think both sockets look bad?

by eichenluft on 22 April 2011 - 18:04

positioning is not correct, impossible to say if both sockets look ok or not if the positioning is not straight.  Sedation, and a vet who knows how to position properly is important.  An alert dog, and vet who says "this is as good as it gets, too bad for you" is not going to work - now with these crooked x-rays, how do you know if what you see is really the dog (and maybe a problem) or might not be the dog but could be due to the positioning?

That said, I do think the sockets could be deeper.  The balls are nice and big and round, but the  necks are short/thick with possibly some remodeling esp. on the left one.  Could be some flattening on that left ball too - hard to tell with the positioning if that is remodeling or the positioning.  That hip could be seated better - again, could be the dog or could be the crooked position.  Note that the knee on that left leg is turned out far more than the right.  Bad positioning, impossible to really tell you if this is a problem or if it is the positioning.  I would not send these x-rays in for rating, they may not pass.

Sockets look shallow, imho, not "bad." I don't think SV will take them w/out the "nameplate" on the film, fwiw. I think they want all the info- your name, dog's name, vet info, yada yada yada.

by SitasMom on 22 April 2011 - 20:04

sv requires a nameplate with
vet's name address and lic. # as well as dogs name and tattoo or chip number

not sure the hips would pass possible with better positioning an SV (a)3 - or  and OFA mild  ?

by duke1965 on 22 April 2011 - 20:04

unbelievable how people can say , maybe with better positioning , thats why we are where we are , if you position better and pull all tricks , and get a passing rate , who are you fooling , even if you know about the littermates being crap , why even bother

make sure the dog doesnot get overweight , grow strong muscles and hope he can have a long painfree life as a pet , for the rest dont bother

molly , are we looking at the same pictures , balls are nice big and round?????

by Nans gsd on 22 April 2011 - 20:04

Well I think it could definitely be better;  right side is better than left side but that is not unusual for one to be different than the other, usually one is better than the other;  I am sure you already knew that.  Neither are horrible but I would not use this dog for any type of a breeding program;  particularly knowing the background even if they do come back OFA FAIR or A3 from SV;  i would not breed this dog.

I would retake these x-rays as Molly stated above and get a different vet with lots of radiograph experience and reevaluate again.  How old is this dog?  Sorry if it is posted somewhere I must have missed it.  Nan
