Cans of beans (chili beans, maple/bacon beans, etc) I was giving my dogs left over chili beans from diner mixed with rice and one of our visitors nearly passed out saying that "OMG, you gonna kill your dogs! Beans will give your dogs bloat and gas" now this person does not even have a dog, have not had a dog as long as I had known her, apparently thats what she was told by her parents...this kind of threw me for a loop, i never really thought about it....

I looked / researched online and there is a mixed review...people who say DO NOT feed beans to dogs also say DO NOT feed  raw meat....since that is not what i believe regarding raw meat their opinion on beans becomes useless...

Any suggestions/ opinions ?

Would you feed your dog canned beans?

I'm not sure if they will give dogs gas like humans, but I've done it before.  Green beans are apparently ok: http://www.pawnation.com/2010/07/28/10-human-foods-dogs-can-eat/  .

I'm pretty sure I've read about not giving dogs raw beans, but I've never heard anything about cooked. In fact, I think even one of the Merrick canned foods has beans in it (navy beans?)
None of my dogs have ever had a problem. They don't get many beans and they don't get them very often, but from pinto to green to kidney to northern, they love them all equally and are no less healthy from the experience

Me, too, Clee.  Green beans are their favorite.  When I make a pot of soup or stew I always put kidney beans in it and they always get a little on top of their kibble........I've been doing this over 20 yrs and never had a problem..............

Lady Frost,,,

I just purchased the book Dr Picairn's Natural Health for Dogs....He suggests feeding kidney, red beans, lentils, pintos, soy, split, white or black...but he only refers to them being cooked....There is a list a veggies that can be fed raw and beans are not on the list...As a matter of fact he states green beans should be cooked first...Also , when cooking dry beans, soaking them for at least 3 hours and changing the water can help reduce the production of intestinal gas ......
