I have a few questions about puppy chow but I have heard some people on here are nasty about dry kibble foods. My husband and I just adopted a Pitbull mix puppy from the Humane Society a few days ago. Lord only knows what food they had her on. She is about 4months old and came to the humane society at 5wks.

Both my husband and I have owned pits before and had great luck with them but I wanted to try a different brand of kibble that we had never tried before. Our puppy is currently on Blue Buffalo Lamb and Oats puppy formula and we wanted to know if that is a good food and formula for our Lilly.

We were also looking at Wellness brand Large Breed puppy formula too.

My husband and I will not be feeding raw so please don't suggest it, if you have any good info on dry kibble puppy chow please contribute to my post. thanks

Those are both good kibble formulas.  If your pup is doing well on the food, then no need to change it.  What works best for one dog may not work as well for another.

Agree. I think wellness is a tad better, but BB is good too. Congrats on the rescue!

Thank you to both of you. I do think Lilly is doing well but she just gobbles the food down so darn fast that sometimes I'm worried she'll throw up.

I guess I have another question too, if she doesn't really 'chew' the puppy food is she still getting the vitamins and nutritional benefits from it or is it all just pooped out?

thanks again

If you feel that she's eating too fast then you could try feeding her kibble to her in puzzle toys to slow her down. We feed our 10 month GSD in the morning using a Kong Wobbler (large) and a Buster Cube (large)- it keeps her occupied for about 40 minutes (as opposed to the 1 minute flat to empty a bowl of kibble). I've been thinking of trying out the Bob-a-Lot.

We feed Acana Wild Prairie (http://www.championpetfoods.com/acana/show-product.php?formulation=phfd).

When I'm strapped for time, I spread the food out on the floor or the back patio, seems it keep them form woofing it down as quickly. You can also had feed her, and teach her tricks at the same time, or a combo of both.

Focus on your face, sit, down, heel, spin, through the legs, bark, beg, roll over, etc. ..... With some trainers, the only time a puppies eats is when its being trained. Resulting in good attitude for training, plenty of food drive and easy trainability later in life. At her age, its all positive fun and games and food rewards.

Once liquid is added to kibble it swells up and falls apart so as long as she's digesting it she should be getting full nutritional value.

we feed taste of the wild - lamb and natures domain - turkey

Best of luck with your new puppy = always an exciting time!
I am a HUGE fan or Orijen - they have a puppy formula. THE best kibble and you will feed less so higher price will balance out.
I feed moistened food too and have 2 dogs that inhale food if allowed - I use slow feed bowls....1 plastic and 1 metal - so I can easily tell the diff.  Metal better.

Wellness is a great company and another option is Solid Gold. Their Wolf Cub is one I have used and there is another puppy food they offer - cannot remember the name presently.

best of luck,

Alex

Thanks again everybody. This girl is the center of my whole world and honestly the best dog I've ever owned. She has not had even one accident since I brought her home (April 16th) she doesn't chew anything, she doesn't bark, she is calm, super sweet and after being in the Humane Society for so long, a little submissive. She is the PERFECT puppy.

I am open to opinions about WHAT she actually is. Humane Society said PitBull mix. I certainly see the Pit in her, but perhaps, Great Dane, too?

Just out of curiosity, should I switch her formula over to a Large Breed variety? I picked up my Blue Buffalo over at Pet Supplies Plus but they were out of the Large Breed version of it.

thanks again. (Sorry about picture quality, they were taken with my cell phone)
