What do you think, Do dogs have that 6th sense, or just co-incidence?   My sister Jeanne (wuzzup), just passed away this past saturday after a not really long fight with cancer. I was at the hospitol with her when she passed. She had been staying with me and my dogs until Thursday,(I had the help of hospice, a great organization).     Anyway, within minutes of her passing, I called my mother  and my niece who were waiting for news at my house. My mother told me  2 minutes after her death, all my dogs starting barking and howling. Than there was silence and my mother swears she heard my sister call her name.     My mom was crying, swearing that the dogs sensed my sisters prescence after death, which was wonderful for my mother to sort of eliminate the doubts of life after death.    Anyone with any similar experiences? I'd love to hear them.

I lost my husband back in 2005 to Cancer and on returning home that morning I let my eldest dog out so he could do his business.  On returning into the house he sat down and let out the deathliest howl I had ever heard.  One long howl and then came to me for a cuddle.  It sent shivers down my spine.

I definetly believe they can sense it.

As for the sixth sense, I have heard many similar stories. There's even a cat in a nursing home that starts to spend most of its day in the room of a person who is about to die. The cat often senses the person is slipping away before the doctors or nurses do.

In a slightly different vein, when my husband passed, his brother had a 'waking' vision of him. My husband said that their mother and father were there, and even their dog, Biff, was there! As my husband would talk about Jesus at the drop of a hat, I have no doubts about where 'there' was!   (Okay, that's the dumbest looking excuse for an angel I've ever seen... )

The GSD we had at the time showed no noticeable reaction to his death, although she did start to go downhill rapidly about that time, and passed away 9 months later, at the age of 14 1/2.  I'm sure she missed him greatly, as she spent most of her day with him, while I was on my nursing rounds.

 I believe dogs are aware of levels of existence we cannot imagine because we are so cut off from our feelings and short on imagination.

A number of years ago I had to put a female down due to DM and when I came home from the vet without her the male I had who was her son knew and went to her bed and let out the most eerie howl I have ever heard in my life.  It was clear to me that it was a howl of grief.  I have never heard that before nor have I ever heard it since and hope that I never hear it in the future.  He knew she was gone.  It was the worst sound I've ever heard in my life.  Dogs grieve just as we do.

Kitkat, I am so sorry to hear about your sister's passing. I enjoyed chatting with Wuzzup many, times! I had missed her posting, and now I know why. You have my sincere sympathies.

Kitkat , sorry to hear about Jeannie, have 2 of her females (9 yrs old now) , great healthy dogs, hope she did not suffer,  and yes the dogs know

Years ago, my very best friend's mother was at home under hospice care. They had a Rottie at the time. As she started to fail, he spent more and more time laying in the doorway of her room. My friend said that right at the time she died, he sat up and looked at the bed, and then watched "something" go up the wall and out of the ceiling. He then let out several low, long whines. They swear that he saw her leave as she passed. And these are not people who really believed in this type of thing...
