I too am sorry to learn of the beautiful dog's health problems... and someone had SHOT HIM??? I hope he enoys a full and speedy recovery. Clavamox ought to knock out the infection. Figures the shelter vet did a bad job. That happens a LOT. At least you got him into t good vet.

Thanks for the kind words for my T. He is still in the hopsital, doing a little better every day though. He's a fighter, and as long as he is making progress, fighting to get back on his feet, I'll fight right along with him. I am posting progress notes on my Facebook page.

Good luck with the sable dog. BTW- What have you neamed him? Do we get pix?

Here's T this morning in the hospital. I'm hoping we can come hope tonight, but I'm in no shape to help him get up so soon after my own surgery, so we'll see.

Shelley, what is wrong with your dog? And what does T stand for?  He is beautiful, and I hope he recovers quickly.

We're still trying to decide on a name.  Any suggestions?

We visited him at my vet's.  He looks okay.  At least she cleaned out the putrid smelling infected stuff.  She wouldn't let him go home yet, she wants to see how is tomorrow.  She added another antibiotic and pain meds.  She talked with the vet in Florida, but I still get the impression she thought that vet in FL did a bad job.  She also showed me the xrays.  I could see the metatarsal ( I think it's called) has metal fragments in it, and the bone grew around it into a lump.  As soon as a I picked him up I could see his left hind leg is thicker than the right.  But she seems to think that it is okay, and the joints were not affected.

T is the call name for my dog, V Carol vom Arolser Holz, SchH3, FH2, KK1 http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/german_shepherd_dog/dog.html?id=123658
He is the only GSD I have nowadays.
I wouldn't be surprised if your new dog was related to him, perhaps sired by his brother Camillo, as Camillo was at stud down in the Carolinas for some time. I've lost track of him since he was sold some 3 years ago... If you're interested, a DNA test, submitted to AKC, would tell the story. This is one reason I was so precocious about getting him out of the kill shelter. All imported dogs have a DNA profile at AKC. Cost about $29.

T suffered FCE (Fibrocartilogenous embolism of the spine) last Thursday. We suspect it is a complication from having a hemongiosarcoma on his spleen removed last fall. Suddenly, he collapsed, couldn't get up. He is in the hospital since it happened, making some progress, ready for physical therapy, but certainly not out of the woods, and it CAN happen again. As long as he is fighting, and making progress, I will do everything I can to help help get back on his feet, but I would not make him live as an invalid... I love my old dog, my near 24/7 companion for years, with all my heart, but I know his days are numbered. I just hope we can enjoy a bit more time together, him on his feet with a decent quality of life.

We did get him on his feet last night, but he tired quickly. It was a big step, but we have a long way to go, on a near-zero budget, and I am not yet well myself, having been "spayed 14 days ago.... Thanks for the kind thoughts and prayers. They're working!

I'd almost call him "Lucky" after the rough road he's traveled... but not quite.

Any updates on how the boy is doing? Is he recovering, able to go home?

by Asja on 28 April 2011 - 20:04

We picked him up from the vet's last night, and he seems okay. He still has to wear an e-collar to stop him from licking. Note: I tried one of those inflatable collars because they look more comfortable, but German Shepherds are too long, he could still reach it and lick, so we went back to the e-collar.  The incision looks okay now. My vet put a drain in it, and it is still dripping a bit.  My vet wants to wait until it is completely dry before removing the drain. He is also on two antibiotics and a painkiller.  We're both sniffing that incision site to make sure it still smells antiseptic-like and not putrid infection smell.  Once you get a whiff of puss and infection, you never forget it.  He also got one dose of Drontal for worms, and needs another in a few weeks.  In a few weeks when he recovers from this, he has to start heartworm treatment.  I've picked up this dog last Friday and already spent almost $1000.  But he's very handsome and has nice manners, and deserves a chance to have a nice home.

This was Saturday.  Someone clipped his fur, I don't know why. With good food and salmon oil, his fur should come back beautiful.

We were thinking about calling him Felix, which is Latin for happy or lucky.  He has a nice friendly personality.  But my husband wants to name him, and hasn't completely decided.

Shelley, I am so sorry to hear about your dog. I also wanted to say that I the same thing happen to my dog Boris a few years ago.  One day he fell over and couldn't walk.  My vet thought it was an embolism at first, but long story short, he had a very bad infection of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, a tick-borne infection.  It took him a month before he could walk again, and several months before he was almost-normal. He was treated with doxycyline for several months.  He was so stubborn,  he refused to give up.  But a year later, he collapsed again, and he had hemangiosarcoma, which my vet thinks was at least partially caused by the RMSF.  He had his spleen removed, but he only lived another three weeks.

I am so sorry to hear about T. I hope he recovers well and comes home.

Thank you for the update. So glad to hear he is improving and finally home. Even with his shaved coat, he is pretty.

He looks so happy now! The despair is gone from his eyes and hope is in them instead. What a difference you've made for him! And he is gorgeous.

Shelley, I hope your dog recovers soon.

SO glad to hear Felix is recovering! He's really gorgeous, clipped or not. I can't wait to see him when he gets all well and grows his new coat in. His face is almost exactly like my T's. Different feet, but same expression and pigment.
:-)))

thanks for the kind wishes.
