I need some assistance? I have a female that was bred naturally at 18 mos old and had a healthy litter of 8 puppies. That was three years ago. Ever since then when she would come in season her vulva wouldn't swell large at all. I have tried to artificially inseminate her twice and it has not worked, what could be wrong? When the vet looks at a culture on the slides everything looks normal. Has anyone had this issue? Does she need to have her hormones checked?

it could be her hormones, get them checked, have you had an ultra sound to make sure she does not have any growth in her?

No I haven't done anything. I wanted to get opinions first before I did anything and spent all kinds of money.

Why was she bred at 18 months to begin with?
She wasn't mature yet.

She was on her third heat and had her hips xrayed. I noticed that other breeders breeding their bitches around that age and figured it was proper time. She had a healthy litter and she bounced right back. But she has not been bred since then.

Apparently, she didn't bounce right back and x-raying the hips isn't enough; they need to be submitted to the OFA for certification and that can't be done until 2 years.

Did you do progesterone testing during her heat cycles to see if she was ovulating?

yes, i agree not to breed before two years old.  i would check her homone level and check for vaganal culture, mycoplasma and brucella and if thats all normal then i would do an ultra sound .  this would be as far as i would go with out costing too much money, i am sure you would find something with these test.

Her hips were certified with the SV as 'a' normal before I bred her. When she was bred she had a vaginal culture and everything was normal the times that she was AI'd the vet did a culture and said she looked fine. Her vagina just wouldn't swell. I will definitely have her hormonal levels checked first and then see if that comes back normal then I will have her get an ultra sound.

Thanks everyone for your response.

if she has Brucella  she will not get pregant and mycoplasma some can have small litters or some will not get pregant.  there is meds for mycoplasma , but its a life sence if she has brucella. i would do them first before the ultrasound. most breeders request the brucella and vagina cultures before breeding.
