Good evening!
I have been out of the loop for a while and I have noticed that longcoats are now allowed to be shown under the SV. However they are being shown seperately as if they are a separate breed. Why? If an AKC registered pup is born to a coated and a short coat parent can it be registerd with the SV if it is 100% European lines? Also why has the amount of longcoats being born increased or maybe its me but it just seems like it from the increase of advertisements. Since they are being shown separately do they receive their own VA ratings and have their own National or World Sieger show? I like long coats although I am partial to the standard coated dogs just because thats all I've known. Does anyone feel the long coat and short coats should be aloud to interbreed and just have the offspring just shown in different rings depending on what comes out of the litter?
Thanks just interested in others opinion.

Plenty of long coats come from stock coated parents. I think theyshould be bred like any other working dog. Not for coat, not for color, not for all the extraneous bullcrap, but for their temperment, health and nerve. I think care should be taken to keep stock coat the goal, pay attention to lines and carriers. as an owener of a long coat, the stock coat is much easier to care for. But it is recessive and if care is taken in breeding, I think some can be used, but they better have a lot of everything in the temperment, nerve, courage, health, and drive dept.

So to all the long coat owners; do you notice any different health problems; any different longevity? Some long coated breeds, Siberians and Alaskan Malamutes' long coats have tons of health problems along with other things different. Is that the cast with the GSD long coats? Kind of curious, Ths Nan
And do long coats that are used in a breeding program through more long coats or the usual 25% or whatever it is?

IMO and as stated by Mystere, the SV finally realized the money they were losing by tossing LC off at pet prices and have remedied the issue.
As far as different classes and AKC, why not. AKC has had this system for many years. Smooth and rough collies do not show in the same class. Other breeds are divided by coat/color, etc.
I do hope that AKC will follow suit and set up a different class for the LC in the U.S. It is ridiculous to toss away an excellent dog because of coat length and it happens everyday.
It's show and it's a game. If you want to play, you have to play by the rules.
Rik
ps, i am willing to be corrected, but as far as the seeming increase in the # of LC, I do not think it possible to breed the thick, plush coats required to win today from dogs that do not have the LC gene.

Rik

One of the most beautiful long stock coated dogs that I have seen is....
Buffalo Bill von Tjaernshaget ScH3 a solid black, long stock coat.
*He is listed here on the PDB.....I just can't figure out how to post the link & picture*
Very impressive, and I would love to own such a beautiful dog with a nice working pedigree.
Congrats to the breeder and owner.

Should we also separate the working lines from the showlines? I mean there is a separate section on the PD for the White Shepherd, why not have a section for each type. When I visit the GSD section I see a SC showline as the main logo for this site and that’s what I expect to see here. Not LC’s, sables, bi-colors, blacks or any rainbow color you can think of. Make it easy on everyone, segregate them all…Admin, hint hint.

I agree with Rik. I don't even have showlines and I've seen evidence of that trend. I have had many calls from people wanting dogs w/Capri's super thick, plushy soft coat that she does pass on to her pups, but they act like LSCs are toxic. Guess what? She carries that gene. She has produced one that was just barely a LSC (we had a debate on here a while back about this pup and we were about 60/40 if he was coated or not), but obviously, she carries it. So, if that's what you want, deal with the fact that your pup may possibly carry it, too.

Reiker, (Reiker Vom Young McDaniel, WGWL) just turned 9 today. Now when I purchased Reiker , he was being groomed for a K9 for my department and the goal was to save the department the cost of purchasing a K9 when mine was trained and certified. At that time even though I was into GSDs I knew nothing of the show lines or anything that was involved in that aspect of the breed. And "working line" wise I only knew law enforcement and training with a K9 in that aspect. He was purchased solely as a tool, to change direction in the job I worked, and as a companion. I was told he had some "famous" dogs in his lines, (Lord G, Ferro and some others), but I either didn't know who they were or it didn't matter to me one way or the other. I just needed him to produce the results I needed. At six mos. he was better than dogs at one year and one and a half. He was strong, full bite, switch on switch off! Hit like a linebacker and in my eyes (and others) was a very good prospect. I believe he was my first encounter with a LC. (Back then I didn't pay attention to or know all the different "types") I was looking for a dog that would/could be an asset for our department and I was willing to cover most if not all the cost myself.
After the first set of tests, it was a different puppy and at that time I didn't want to touch or start bonding till I knew who passed all the tests. The second set of tests, Reiker came out on top and the first thing I said when I seen him was "long haired?............, hmmmnnnnnn? My uniform, my cruiser. What a mess!" The department played politics and so no K9 program. Reiker still trains but due to the work schedule back then there was no time to attempt to title him and didn't know of anyone that could do that task for me.
He's not as fast as he was, (he's still fast) but the new girls are faster! Anastacia, 2 yoa, CWL and Arabella, 7 mos, WGWL. Reiker can still hit like a linebacker, still has strength, stamina, endurance. Bites full, bites hard. And when the girls get out of hand still puts them in their place. We sit here and say our dogs are perfect or near perfect? Reiker is!...... honestly don't know what more I could or could have asked for? Puppies, yes! The goal is to breed Reiker with Ana, keep all puppies that are excellent candidates for explosive detection. Either breed him to Bella for same purpose or either A.I. or (if things work out) one of Reikers' sons and Bella. That's the "BIG PICTURE!"
No health issues, ever!. Strong, alert, active, loving, (LOVES children-turns back to a puppy when around children!), runs, jumps, wrestles, trains, bites, still the whole package........ just a tad slower.
Might spell it wrong but cebastious cysts? That is all he has. I'm on my "work" laptop so none of my pictures are present. With the new system saving our pictures to our own folder, I don't know if that was since we joined or since they started that feature? But you can see Reiker under "Here are my GSDs" alboe2009. And I'll try to get to my laptop later and post a couple of pictures.
