When did the practice of AI start being utilized in breeding dogs?

How common is the use of frozen semen?

AI bred dogs are registered by AKC. AI have been done since the 1960 s, By professor Platz at the International Canine Semon Bank. There are several of these banks across the US. Go on line and just type in ICSB and you can get history and all pertenant info on AI

Prof. Carol Platz is a very good man, very professional, friendly and a world of knowledge to speak with. As a matter of fact I just saw him today and had our Stud dog V. Aron vom Poppitz collected at the ICSB held in Wa. this weekend in Kitsap County. I have also been to their home office in Sandy, Oregon and toured the facility. Very interesting process and set up. I was just talking with him today (while I waited for our little swimmers to go into their little storage vials) in regards to the numbers of dogs they have collected and stored and was told just over 800,000. It is quite remarkable. We are very fortunate here in the northwest not only to have his incredible services but also two of the top reproductive specialist in the US.  Dr. Cindy Smith in Tacoma Washington and Dr Cheryle Lopate near Portland Oregon. Both of these ladies as well are members with the Society for Theriogeneology and were speakers at the National Conference held in Seattle last year. Top Reproductive Specialist from around the world were in attendance and the last day of the conference was open to Breeders with an open discussion panel. What an incredible opportunity to have been able to go to this conference. It is crucial in my opinion that if you are going to use frozen semen you work with a reproductive specialist.  Combining the two specialities are worth their weight in gold for the greatest success in viable litters. It is correct that Professor Platz ( love his last name BTW) began freezing semen back in the 60's and they recently had a litter of puppies whelped from 30 y/o stored semen. Incredible. Mr. Platz is very nice to talk with and easy to get a hold of if you have questions. Here's their number 503-663-7031 their website is www.ik9sb.com

Hi Vikram,

Thanks for the information. Is there a reason the SV does not allow AI?

Hi DD and JulieM,

Thanks for the info. on Dr. Platz. I have noted his contact information in my important file.

Take Care,

Cheri

Interesting info Julie.  It is my understanding that if you use frozen or shipped (fresh cooled) semen in order to register the litter with AKC that you must use an AKC repro vet.  Anyone know anything about this?  I did talk to a vet who is an AKC approved repro vet--he is not too far from me--and he said it was so.  Just wondering.  I have a good friend who breeds Siberian Huskies and I know she does almost all her breedings by AI but also collects the semen too and has no problem with registration.

A friend had a litter of 11 last year with A.I. shipped in. The vet is a repro specialist in my area.

I am really up in the air on this issue, as a couple of dogs I am considering for my bitch are too far to drive and I'm not going to ship her. It does seem more people get misses than hits.

just thinking out loud,

Rik

I am hoping, maybe some day, to get a pup fathered by David Nebelholz through AI.

It is encouraging to hear about 30 year old frozen semen working.

Michele

Julie-Attilia sure looks great in your avatar.  Pharaoh is very proud of little sister's accomplishments.

Don Simon of Rainbow Valley German Shepherds in Fallbrook, California owned David Nebelholz. As I  understand it they did freeze David's semen before he died. Don died several years ago, but his wife may still have interest in their business--Southwest Construction in Fallbrook.

To register AI in AKC – male has to be DNA’d and the process of registering such litter is much more complicated. It requires special original registration document to be signed by bitch owner, authorized person performing AI and a stud owner. Only the original signed document allows registering such a litter. Regarding ‘AKC repro vet’ – I don’t think that that is so difficult to find one. Everyone that does AI’s on regular basis will be AKC approved. You, as a breeder, can AI your dog yourself, you will just need to fill in the paperwork accordingly. Here is AKC link that explains all the procedures: http://www.akc.org/reg/artificialinsemination.cfm

When using frozen semen the only good chance you will have for puppies is by doing the transcervical or surgical insemination and the timing is crucial.

I just AI’d my girl with fresh extended because going across the country to the stud wasn’t the option (I live on East Coast , stud is on West Coast). It still was expensive (all the progesterone testing) and time consuming but it was much better option for me than flying my girl across the county (during the famous winter storm), trying to time the breeding and then stressing her by flying her back (that stress could result in aborting the pregnancy, too). Driving during winter across US wasn’t my first choice either…
