I am looking to add mulch in my front yard this year....
Any suggestions on which type or brand of mulch is safe for the dogs??
Which ones are not?
Thanks,
Robin

I have a friend that sold a puppy a month or so ago and it was dead in a week due to eating Scott's brand mulch, it was the dark chocolate colored one, unfortunately that is all the information I have on it. I do know that it did not say anything on the bag about it being potentially hazardous. Her clients were devastated, it was so, so sad and such a waste. They are looking into fighting Scott's for some kind of reimbursement for the puppy and for their vet bills. The vet said that it was not the first case he had seen.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Barbie.....I will make note: NO SCOTT'S mulch.

BTW...I think that the mulch you are speaking of is....Cocoa mulch.

hay and straw are safe........just not very glitzy for that well-manicured lawn look.

It was not the mulch made from the cocoa hulls, that I did ask because when she told me I was of course doing research and read about the cocoa mulch so I asked. I'll see if I can find out exactly which one it was for you :) ~ Barbie

Robin, see if you can get a load of mulch from a tree trimming company.  I get mine from the township where I live and it's not treated in any way.  The bagged mulch you get from Home Depot or similar stores tend to be treated and therein lies the problem. Just ask the tree trimmers if their mulch is treated, most likely it's not and it's cheaper in bulk than the bagged mulch.

Mulch may create splinters that can get into dogs paws as well, especially if your dog runs on it. My girl started to have problems with itchy paws, so I had to remove it all. The good side is that my grass is doing much better.

I agree that the untreated mulch from tree trimming company may be a different story. However it doesn’t look as nice… I’ve heard that a neighbor of mine used those chips and sprayed them with ecological (natural and non toxic) wood oil to give them a nice rich color.

go with stone - lasts longer, looks better and doesn't attract insects

I know that when you bring a pick up load of limbs and branches to our local landfill they give you an equal load of chipped mulch of the branches they have just done as they come in and it doesn't cost you anything if you want them. And these are just natural chips from our local trees which are not treated. Try calling your landfill. The companies that sell those tiny bags of mulch in the garden centers treat them heavily or they are full of bugs and the mice in the warehouses chew up the bags and this doesn't help in selling them and many will proudly declare treated with herbicides and insecticides also.
