OK.... I have a 1996 Ford Bronco (Dog Mobile) that I adore but it is about time to retire him to the pasture. I am looking online at a 2001 F-150 extra cab and was wondering if anyone has one and if they do, could a crate fit behind the seats (if not, what about if the back seat was taken out?). If it does fit, will the drivers seat be able to be pushed back or tight to the wheel??
thanks

K-9 Mom,
I owned a 2009 Ext cab, although it is a different year and is alot different I suspest the sizes are similar. I could fit a 400 series crate behind the fron seats ON TOP of the rear seat, but with the seats folded neither a 400 or 500 crate would fit. If you completely unbolted the seats and took them out you might be able to fit either crate but I believe if you take the seat backs out it will leave an open hole behind were there is no upholstery. you could put a cap on the truck and use the bed? I traded in for a crew cab and put a cap on it. Hope this helps!

Try looking at a Chevy Silverado 4 door. Theres enough space to put 2 crates (one large and one a bit smaller) with the seats folded up. Good luck on your search

Hi K9Mom,
I think a Ford extended cab would be to tight, not to mention a pain in the *&%$ to get the dogs in and out of the cab
I drive an '03 Ford crew cab (4-door) it is super roomy, even with the front seats pushed back. I have 30"w x 60"l x 32"h of usable space in the back with the back seat in place. However, getting an assembled crate past the door opening might be tricky. The door opening is only 22" wide.
If you have to have a truck I would just put a shell over the bed.
If you don't need a truck I would consider a crossover SUV. I have a friend that drives a Honda Element and he has enough room in the back of that thing to put two big crates, other stuff and he gets good gas milage.
Good Luck in Your Search.

I have an 09 dodge ram. Lots of room for people in the back but no way can you get a crate through the doors. I put a fiberglass tonue sp. on it and now can put two 500 crates at the very back of the bed then put the glass top down . It does not close all the way but it keeps the dogs dry and the wind off them while traveling. Mine has locks on the glass top shocks so I just set them. Takes only a second to do. No tieing the top down that way.

We have an 09 GMC Sierra 2500 HD ext'd cab and the same model, older truck in the 1500 series.
You can put a 500 crate on the back seat but you have to put it in apart, bottom then top. You cannot fit it through the door.
You also cannot sit comfortable in the passenger seat nor the driver's seat as the crate won't allow the back of the seat to be flexible.
We have one in there that will come out now. It goes in for the winter for any emergency. We use the older 1500 more so the newer one really just sits in the garage and the low miles sure reflect it! I miss my Tahoe!

Thanks for all your responses. I know.... I LOVE my Bronco, I get (2) 500's and (1) 400 into the back (removed the back seat) and a 4th dog can ride free with a foldable crate when we get there. It is just perfect. Unfortunately, he is an old model and rusting out from under me. :o(
I would like to replace it with an Expedition but the $ just isn't there to make that move. I had 2 F-150's before the Bronco and they were both good, had a fiberglass cap on the back but it is only convenient to get to the two crates at the tailgate. To put two more crates in there you have to pull out the one's on the end and I lose my stuff to the back of the bed. Also, when I travel with just 1 dog, I end up just letting him ride free up front because I feel bad putting them in the back when it is to cold or to hot (I am in New England).
How about an F-150 plus cab with a metal divider between front seat & the back? Does anyone do that?
Either way I would put a cap on the back and two 500's back there. Just trying to find a way to finally not have the dogs ride up front and loose (which is my goal every time I get another truck but it always falls through, LOL!! Those sad eyes usually win out!!).
Thanks

K9Mom, I am going to try something different this year. I ordered a slide out bed bottom for my dodge. I'll be able to get 4 crates in that way and be able to just slide the bed bttom out and have access to all four crates that way. There is a company here in Alaska that makes them and they are heavy duty. I found out through the local fire department and they told me where to go as they just love them. Perhaps you can find someone in your area that makes them as well. I love the pickup with the fiberglass tonue becuase its clean when your not useing it and its going to be great when I do use it.

Thanks, I will check that out...
