Red Sable

Hi, I see this on ads and was wondering exactly what is meant by that and how one knows if a dog is single or dual purpose.

Thanks!

single purpose  means they are a dog that does one thing.  Narcotics, patrol, explosive, etc.  They are trained for one specific task

Dual purpose means they are trained for 2 jobs.  Patrol & narcotics perhaps. or Narcotics & explosives.

So they are trained for one task, but still capable of doing another if trained?

For instance, I thought maybe it was referring to a dog that didn't have enough aggression to be a PPD dog, but was more suited to SAR?

Red Sable, from talking to some people before who had single purpose prospects available, some of the dogs just weren't suited for the other area of work. Like one may have been well suited for narcotics...but not good or capable for the patrol part of police work.

I think it depends on the dog.  If it is single purpose maybe the dog only excelled at one thing and therefore just made it a single purpose.

Some dogs excelled at 2 different disciplines so they could make it a dual purpose.

Also it may depend on what the law enforcement agency may need.  Some only need single purpose while some may need dual.

I have always used single/dual purpose when it comes to police k-9's.

"Usually" dual purpose refers to some form of scent detection and handler protection.

Ace,
Doing both Narc and Explosives with the same dog is a big No No in LE.

Single purpose usually means the dog does not have "it" to do handler protection/apprehension but would be well suited to scent work.
Dual purpose usually means scent detection and handler protection/apprehension.

Ace,
Send me a PM and I'll gladly explain it, I'm not going to do it here.

Melba you are right on.

"Doing both Narc and Explosives with the same dog is a big No No in LE"

Would this be because of the procedure/precautions you take after a dog hits on explosives as opposed to narcotics?

There is no way of knowing which the dog is alerting to.
