Dog1

So far I know what she doesn't like. Here's the list:  Raw meat, raw chicken, dry dog food (TOTW and a couple others), canned dog food, milk, butter, American cheese, eggs, mayonnaise (I don't blame her but I thought I would try anyway), butter, half and half. She will eat some smoked turkey and cooked bacon.

She's been here 3 days, 9 weeks old, drinks water fine, dropping weight, still lively, shows absolutely no sign of stress. She's happy, playful, full of energy. What can I do other than make her a breakfast of bacon with smoked turkey for lunch and dinner?

It's hard to imagine a pup not eating or that no one has given you their .02 yet.

Without beeing there al I 'm going to say is maybe stress but that's hard for me to take in.

Some of those ingredients? I wouldn't but your saying the pup is not even eating/nibbling some of that food even in small quantities??? Hard to believe.

What he has eaten, turkey and bacon, I'd concentrate on the turkey and watch the bacon........ grease. Can't remember if you cooked it or not? Find out from the breeder what he was eating prior to coming to you. I would experiement with other puppy foods adding the turkey. At first I was going to say try some catfood but can't remeber if that is a bad thing for  puppies. Research it before doing it. I'm just mind boggled so probably by the time you get this your boy is already eating. My pup will eat anything and your fingers.

Funny, but when things are really "quite" something usually is up! The othe day the pup ate @ a 2' X 2' area of fabric material from one of the dog pillows. So I don't have that problem over here. Good luck and keep us updated and when it happens tell us what she finally ate and if it was due to the acclimation?

Randy, have you checked a stool sample yet? Some of the parasites/organisims can make them not feel like eating. Especially coccidia and giardia.
I've had them go for 4 days w/o eating and still acting normal. On that particular one I ended up having to supliment with enzymes and then all suddenly picked up.
Just a couple of thoughts...
Hope she settles in soon.

Randy -- have you tried some ground beef (raw or slightly cooked) or raw egg yolk in the kibble?   When Rex was that age, I also would put a small amount of canned milk over his food.   He ate 3 meals a day.

Roast fowl. Never seen a dog yet that would turn its nose up at wild game either.

Years ago I imported one (same age) who did the same thing.  Then I put her in a crate and let her watch the older dog eat and bingo that turned the tide.  Just a thought...

Know what stands out, Randy.  Smell.  Bacon and smoked turkey.  For now, just get her to eat,  I'd roast up a couple of Bell and Evans' chicken breasts one day and a small roast beef another day.  The aroma of them cooking will stimulate her appetite.  Add in a little egg noodles or pasta with the meat juices.  Sit down with her and you eat the same food.  She'll probably start begging.

Also......You have any vitamin B Complex capsules around.  Open one and sprinkle a little on the food.....not more than 25 mg worth on the food.  It's a stress and energy vitamin that stimulates the appetite. Solgar's a good brand if you have to purchase some.

Judy---If she was older and just being finicky, I might try that.......but she's a baby and it could make matters worse. For now, I'd pamper her with the most tempting taste and gradually add in other food.

How about the easy fix, have you tried what the breeder was feeding?  Stool samples for bacteria and not just worms?

by Xira on 27 February 2011 - 03:02

Get a vet check if you have not already and I would feed what the breeder was for now. Assuming all is well after vet check offer her the food and if she does not eat take it away and offer it at the next feeding time she will get hungry and decide to eat. 3 days is not long give it some time. I just went through the same thing with a pup and now she eats when it is offered to her

2 things...contact breeder + contact a vet. That might get you some solid/tangible answers
