I purchased 3 Priefert Kennels when they first came out many years ago. Within 3 years, they were so rusty and had so many holes rusted into it, we had to TRASH them. We also have cattle, so I began looking into other types of cattle panels (which last a very long time and are tough). Then I discovered a similar 20' panel called HORSE PANELS. Horse panels are most common at th 20' x 5' size but are also available in the 20' x 6' size. We completely rebuild all our kennels (10 kennels) using 6' horse panels + treated 2"x4" lumber for the price of 3-4 Priefert kennels,in 2000 and my kennels barely have any rust on them at all. Just thought I would share this information.
If you can build it yourself, you're better off. Check with your local cattle/horse supply dealer for how to order the HORSE PANELS.

we have had the same issues with magnum kennels from behlen. they are nice and heavy, but rust terribly and then the welded wire pannels pull away from the frame. VERY DANGEROUS for the dogs as they can get a foot or leg caught in the gap and punctured. we had them rewelded and repaired several times, painted to prevent more rust and eventually resorted to welding angle iron reinforcement to prevent pulling away. in view of how much they cost, i am really disgusted and looking for something else. i have thought about building my own and glad to hear that someone else has had success doing that. :)

Contessa...can you post a picture of your kennel? I am about to build a small outdoor kennel for my girl.

I would like to see also if you can post pictures. I've had good luck with the Priefrert kennels but am always open to alternatives if I need a kennel set up in a new location.

I have "Options Plus" Platinum kennels and like them. These babies are gorilla proof. The openings are smaller at the bottom that the top so puppy proof too.

We purchased 3 kennels from options plus and have only had them for a couple of years. They are rusted and 1 of the gate doors just fell off. They look like their 10 years old now. Dog's can't get through them (strong 8 guage kennels), but it's not nice to pay that amount of money and have them rusted and looking older than what they are. Would love to see Contessa's kennel picture's too!!!

I've used the powder coated Priefert kennels for several years, with no breaks and and no rust. I like them, but they're darned expensive.

I am about to move to a small house in town and need to buy kennels for my garage. Does anyone have ideas? I want four kennels and would L-O-V-E any pictures and ideas so I can try to figure out the BEST possible configuration. They will not live in the kennels 24/7 but enough that I want to have them be the best I can do on a newly single mom budget. Number one concern is safety. 2nd mobility, 3rd ease of maintenance and so on. You know what I mean?
Any creative and fantastic ideas out there?

I have the Behlen magnum kennels in hot dipped galvanized. Not the powder coated versions. I've never had an issue with rust or busted welds on these kennels. Certainly not cheap but they hold up for me.
I've also got the Tarter Elite series kennels. Comparable to the Behlen magnums in powder coat finish. I have a few places on those where the paint was chipped off the wire during shipping that are rusting. A little steel wool and some rustoleum should take care of that. So far, I'm fairly happy with these also but I don't expect them to last like the galvanized kennels have.
