cinnamongirl

I purchased a schutzhund potiental puppy in November of 2010 and paid a considerable amount for him. Upon our intial vet check I was told that his left testicle had not dropped and they were not able to feel it. He is now almost 6 months old and it still has not desended. My question is should the breeder disclosed this when I picked him up and should the breeder discount his price? Since I had planned on breeding him once he was titled.

It will not affect his schutzhund abilities, but if you purchased him for breeding you should have something in your contract about testicles desending by a certain age. Call the breeder and ask about it.

Don't be impatient. Sometimes they, one or both, descend and ascend like a yoyo when they're young dogs.

I have had a dog with a testicle in and out until the dog was over 9 months. I never have them neutered before a year if they never descend. But if you paid for a schutzhund/breeding dog and the rights to breed he must pass survey and can't do that without a Koerung. You have an argument with the breeder and should be renumerated to a point or given another dog of the same quality dog from another breeding in return for the dog you have.

Ive dealt with this before and to be honest, if I were you and you can, take the dog back and ask for another one. You dont have alot of time invested in the dog at this point and the wait and see game wouldnt be an option. Why put all your time and effort into a dog that does well to know that you can never breed him.

I'm with Bhaugh on this issue.....

Consider this.......In defense of the breeder, maybe the testicle was down at the time you actually took possession of the puppy......which brings up the question of  How long after was the intial visit ?

Did you contact the breeder at the time of the intial visit..?..
If Not, As a breeder, my question to you would be, "why didn't you contact me and inform me of this issue"......

In my opinion not to be sarcastic or rude, but you have not said you contacted the breeder with this issue yet.....Instead of  posting and asking for opinions from those who don't anything about your terms or conditions of the sale.........Give the breeder the opportunity to work with you on a decision you both can agree on.......The breeder may answer all your questions you have asked here..I would give the Breeder the first opportunity before posting them here......

This is not intended to be a "shame on you" comment and I  hope you or no one else takes it that way or turns it into one...... Its a very sincere opinion and I mean no ill intentions to anyone....

Kerschberger

"cinnamongirl" hmmm   i just had this happen to one of my pups.   who also left in November and is 5 months now.   This pup in my case was sold on LIMITED registration and this was disclosed upfront to the buyer in a written contract.  There was NO discussion ever of breeding or schutzhund potential.  Just a good family dog, there is your difference.   All my dogs are trainable, at what level is truly up to the handler/owner as a bad trainer/handler can make a good dog look bad, and a good trainer/handler can make a bad dog look good...

Thus IF indeed you have a written contract with FULL registration from AKC and you have proof of your desire in writing that  you wanted a schutzhund quality male you choose the wrong breeder.  did you get references?  is one example.

In the very few ocassions that I sell with FULL registration that pup should have both down.  But I simply seldom sell with full, EVEN if a buyer does eventually follow thru with Schutzhund training/titling.

The real facts are that in 8 yrs of breeding (3 litters a year) I have had ONE buyer actually follow thru with this desire to do Schutzhund.  Everyone else has bailed out once they realize the work and time and money involved in Schutzhund training.  So in my case, I sell only with LTD registration with the option to buy full registration IF the dog indeed 'deserves' to be bred.

Next, at six months, you are not likely to get that one down UNLESS you seek help.
There is a product called CYSTORELIN which can be used by your vet to help it descend.
No folks its not illegal, don't start cryping me out.   Its in the dogs' best interest to have m down.  Would you not want that for your baby boy child too?

HOWEVER, you should first ultra sound and see where it is in the inguinal canal.  If its way up there still
then forget it.   If its halfway there, you could use the Cystorelin (again with your vets approval) and it may or may not work.   Some vets are also able to massage it down once its located.  But you have to know a breeder friendly one and there aren't many (because the vets are idiots by the way)

Then, if it didn't work and the dog has the ability to do the work, ENJOY YOUR DOG.  You can still title him, except for the Breed Survey.  & (have the undescended one removed by age 2 and leave the other one in place)

Might I add that breeding should be done by pro's not just anyone.   You likely do not have the knowledge to be the judge of which dogs are a great match or not.  Also, unless you score seriously high in the show circuit no reputable breeder is going to bother with your dog anyway, being that there are plenty of males to choose from who are the 'whole package'.

Not to discourage you, I just want you to have a reality check...  And do what's best for your DOG, not you...

In response to nonacona60 remarks, OF COURSE the breeder was notified. The puppy was taken to the vet within 48 hours after pick up. The breeder was notified at that time, and again at 12 weeks and again 16 weeks and again just a few days ago!!! First reply from breeder was usually does not dropped until 12 weeks, second reply was 16 weeks, third reply was sometimes 6 months, and last reply was probably will not dropped keep us posted. Nothing in detail but simply a short statement. Returning the puppy is not an option for me at this time, has already become a member of our family. But my question again was should the breeder had told me about the testicle at the time of pickup my decision about bringing this puppy home would have been different.

In response to Kerschberger, come on people...of course the dog was purchased with a full registration otherwise this would not be a issue. He is line bred off of World Sieger VA1 Visum von Arminius and World Sieger VA1 Jeck von Noricum , these two lines have produced more World Siegers then any other lines in the history of the breed, so the potential is there to score seriously high in the show circuit. Please do not make statements about the knowledge I may or may not have, this only shows your lack of knowledge. People read the question.....should the breeder disclosed that only one testicle has dropped at the time of purchase???

Cinnamongirl,

Yes the breeder should have disclosed this information to you. Did your puppy have a health certificate in the vaccination book when you picked it up?

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

It only had a vaccination and worming schedule, but there is also a statement that the health and temperament of the dog is excellent to the best of our knowledge at the time of sale. I also received an email that stated the puppies received a health check up before leaving. This was not a last minute purchase...desposit was made on this litter before pups were born. Photo's were sent weekly so there was no reason why this was not disclosed. I pulled my Guarantee and it is very general, its states guaranteed for 5 years for any genetic problems that would keep the dog from living a normal and healthy life.
