PDB Crew,

My Young Marine, asked me before he left about Military Dogs.  I understand the process in Law Enforcement, what about the Military?

Does anyone know anything about the selection process for Military Dogs?
How does the Military or Department of Defense select these dogs?  What ages are they when they go into war settings?

Breed:

Breeder:

Costs:

Types of training:

Any feed back would be of great assistance.

Kindly

Many of the dogs that go to war are bred at Lackland AFB. I had contacted them about a flunked dog that didnt make it. Pups are fostered by the public then returned when its time for training. I was told that the dog has 120 days to be a duel purpose dog and pass the necessary tests to be sent to a handler. Not alot of time imo. Dogs that flunk out are offered to police depts free then to the public.

Im sure they would answer your questions. Be patient on the time it takes for them to get back to you. It took them 4 months with me. It was so long I actually forgot that I had emailed them.

Are you asking on behalf of your the son asking about the dogs themselves? Or on behalf of your son asking how to go about being a MWD Handler?

Not sure if the website, (I didn't look at it) is the right one, not saying it isn't but I have read numerous sites that will break down the process from day one for a MWD for DoD. All brances MWD ( I am almost positive) will come from Lackland, AFB.

I posted on another thread a couple of days ago (haven't started the search though), but National Geographic @ 7-9 yrs ago had a documentry on Lackland AFB/K9 Boot Camp and broke everything down. I have it on VHS. Now with everything after 9/11 I'm sure that some things have changed but it should still be along the same lines. I'll search for it tomorrow.

I'm not sure if the 341st at Lackland still trains all MWDs. I learned somewhere that Lackland no longer trains the Scout Dog which is employed by Army and Marine Corps infantry.  Lackland used to train all MWDs but other gov't agencies have subsequently developed their own MWD training programs.  The Army has established a MWD program at Ft Leonard Wood, Missouri.  Suggest you Google MWD Fort Leonard Wood and you'll find a number of sites listed which may answer your question. The Marine Corps has recently requested an increase in the number of bomb sniffers.  Marine Corps Scout Dog handlers are from the Military Police occupation field and receive their training at Ft Leonard Wood.  You may also obtain information from links listed on the VDHA (Vietnam Dog Handler Ass'n) web site.
