Ok I read this article and its pretty one sided if you ask me. Every trait they mentioned could be said of several other breeds. If you read the last line in the article it sounds more like a plug from a breeder who is selling their dogs more then anything else.

When you search online, you mostly see dobermans, rottweilers, gsds, mastiffs, komondors, boerboels, pit bulls listed as the best dogs for protection. Temperament and trainability are very important. I've owned airedale terriers and gsds over the years. I found airedales to be loyal and somewhat protective, stubborn at times when it comes to training, and not always the most courageous. My gsds are loyal, easily trained, very protective, and very courageous. What other breeds are easy to train, have a good temperament (especially with children), are loyal, protective, and courageous? Which breeds do you think are the best all around for family protection?

GG Turner, I could say the same thing about my Bouviers.

That's what I'm asking, sibo, which breeds? So Bouviers is your top choice?
by sjbo659 on 23 February 2011 - 22:02
GGTurner, For me yes. That does not mean its the same for everyone. There are homes and people that are perfect for GSD's then there are the homes and people suited for Bouviers or any other breed for that matter. But all in all I find the Bouviers to be fearless, smart, very trainable if you begin young since they can be very stuborn, and loyal beyond question.

Interesting article on this topic: http://www4.ncsu.edu/~n51ls801/securitydogs.html . Bouviers are mentioned in section D (profile of a protective family dog) of the article.

It really depends on what your idea of protection is. A GSD could be the best beast for your situation or it could be another breed. I always hate these "which is best" topics.
