I am about to try to start tracking with my 9 month old GSD. I am a NEW handler, and this is my first GSD. Any thoughts on :

Only the NOSE really KNOWS Part 1

This looked like a good article...I saw it on the Schutzhundvillage.com website! I also saw some videos earlier this week on the pdb site...

Any information for beginners would be appreciated!

Best thing to do is to find someone to help. Club, etc. You should read and watch videos, but it's nice to have a knowledgable person there to guide you. Nice to actually watch other lay and run tracks. Go to a seminar. What area do you live in. Perhaps someone is close to you on here.

Doing a seminar or working with a private schutzhund trainer (careful who you work with) could help you a great deal.

I like to start with scent boxes and then move on to straight lines and finally on to a track.  With tracking calmness is very important and I am never very calm so tracking is one of my weak points.  But, I have worked with 100 point trackers and they have helped me a great deal.  It really helps to have a dog that LOVES to smell and/or eat.  Where are you located maybe I can recommend someone who can help?

Read the book Tracking from the Begining by Gary Patterson. Very good book, easy to understand, and it will get you off on the right foot.  Remember a dog is always using his sense of smell. Believe it or not your dog tracks every day.    Have fun with it!!

I think you really need to find someone who has had success in tracking first .... then for schutzhund or SAR ?  .........it does make a differance ......... if you imprint problems into the start you will have many problems in the future to come ....   Regards .... Thanks to everyone for their input. I have recently joined a local Sch Club and plan on starting tracking with experienced handlers/trainers soon. Being new, I feel like I have to read and review before I get started. Do my homework, so to speak!!! Thanks for the learning tools posted....I am off to check them out!!! I will order the book also!!!!!
