A friend who's GSD has had an operation and is now recovered, but several months on there is a fairly large patch on the lower back, and does not appear to be re-growing his coat.  It almost looks like mange, but this is definitely not so, and the Vet is equally surprised, but only suggested that it may grow back in time.

Anyone experienced this?  Does the coat eventually grow back?

Thanks,
Vixen

Has the moulted since the operation?  If the area was shaved just after a moult then it is not unusual for the coat to take a long time to come back.

Have him tested for Cushing's Disease.

Thank you both for those interesting suggestions.  (This is someone from my Club, so I will certainly pass this information on).

Much appreciated.

I had this same problem with one of my Malinois.  There is actually a name for this, but I don't remember what it was.  Basically, it's not unusual and with some dogs it can take almost a year for the coat to return to normal.  Where they are shaved can effect it, along the back/spine is slower to regrow than legs, sides, etc.  Also how often the "blow coat".   Being altered can also effect it, in part because sometimes being altered effects when/how a dog blows coat.

I talked to my vet about it, and asked if there was anything that we should be testing her for, he said no, it just takes longer for some dogs to get their coat back than others.
