Yesterday, we had a co-op student come out to the kennel for an interview. I asked him what his plans were for the future. He said he'd like to be a veterinarian. I told him how very hard it was to get into veterinary college (I tried it myself and failed. You need an 85% overall average before they will even LOOK at you.)
Then I asked him what his alternate choice of career would be if he couldn't make the grade. He replied, "I'd like to breed dogs."
That was when my business partner and I both started laughing......
Anyway, he seems like a good kid, and very bright. At age 15, he already has several university level courses under his belt. Maybe he WILL make it into O.V.C.

Way to laugh at a 15 yo. Way to kill his dreams too. Maybe things have changed from the 50s. More universities have vet programs today and he sounds like his studies are in order. He is, after all, in AP classes at 15.

Yeah, Don, I did think of encouraging him to start his own puppy mill, which is one of few sure ways to make money from breeding... but my conscience got in the way!
S. gave him the full run-down on breeding: the cost of treating her bitch for pyo, the cost of A.I., ultrasound, x-rays, weeks and weeks of antibiotics to keep the pyo from coming back, the sleepless nights, having pups born dead, learning to tube feed for the first time at 3 a.m.(thank GOD for internet videos!!) then puppy shots, worming, wellness exams, food, bedding, etc. etc. She didn't even mention C-sections, or some of the other thing$$$$ that can go wrong!

Lmao. My friend wanted to study to become a veterinarian...her family said it took too long...told her to become a HUMAN doctor... Like that takes any less time...

I'm sure this subject was not posted for the purpose of our opinions on what and how you replied to the young boy but.....
..... I do agree that discouraging him was not the way to go. Our economy is hard enough as it is, esp. for our younger generations.
I would have encouraged the Vet. School, and discouraged the 'career' of breeding....as there is non. It should be noted to this young boy that Breeding IS NOT a career. A career is a profession where money can be made. Breeding is not! You don't make money breeding dogs!
Well, I wish the best of luck for this young boy....sounds like he's headed in the right direction. I know 18-20 year olds that have no idea what they want to do.....=(

Who knows..maybe he will become a vet one day! A couple of my former high school students are going to vet school. Glad I didn't discourage them!

I don't know what country you are in, but here in the US a 15 year old in AP courses is pretty impressive. If this kid has done well in them, it suggests that the child is quite bright and may well have a very good chance of getting into veterinary school
My husband is a veterinarian, we have been in the horse and companion animal business since 1984. It is not an easy road, it is not all that lucrative. The wealthy veterinarian is a rare bird. I don't encourage our children to follow in their father's footsteps. If an individual is truly dedicated to veterinary medicine, then that is their calling and they will find a way to make it happen.
I think that discouraging thhis young person is abhorrent. That is shameful.

[sigh] Okay, I suppose I SHOULD have mentioned that I am a registered nurse (now more or less retired) and my business partner used to work for a vet, so we did tell him there was a lot we could teach him about animal health issues. He has an 81% average, so veterinary medicine definitely IS within his reach if he is willing to work hard enough. I DID say that, didn't I??
The whole point of the post was about him wanting to breed dogs for a living!

As a parent to a son who also took ap courses and mastered them at same age, I agree with the above post. I wish the young man all the best and hope he does not listen to bad advice. I wanted to be a vet long long ago and did not have parent support in it at all and I have always supported my sons in all they wanted in life as well as boys I have mentored through scouting and other pursuits.
