Our local government just passed a new tethering law. Dogs have to be on a 12 foot lead and the owner has to be outside with them while they are tethered. The following article is about a dog that "attacked" a mail carrier while tethered (owner was present): http://www2.wspa.com/news/2011/jan/31/3/pit-bull-attacks-upstate-mail-carrier-ar-1406150/ . What are your thoughts on tethering dogs? My dogs have a one acre fenced in back yard to run in but some people don't have fenced in yards and tether their dogs.

Another ridiculous law that the real culprits will never obey anyway.

Sounds pretty much like a leash law to me.....
Only an irresponsible owner would let their dog of any breed off leash at anytime, regardless of how well they are trained...They are still animals and have minds of their own which are not controllable 100% of the time...JMO

Nona, I believe this is when the dog is on it's own property. Last time I looked leash laws didn't apply when my dogs were on MY property.
I think it's another example of the government penalizing the wrong people. And not thinking it out very well. I know plenty of people with various types of tie out rigs that are very secure, and the dogs are quite happy on. In some cases happier then in a kennel. And in some cases, such as an overhead trolley system, 12 feet for the tether can actually be to long. I don't tether any of my current dogs, but I have in the past with a fence jumper until I could get the fence set up in such a way as to prevent any further jumping.
As long as I contain my dogs on my property, and I do it in a humane manner, it's really none of the government's business which method I choose to use.

Malndobe,
I can understand and respect your opinions.....If that is how you feel, who is anyone to tell you that you are wrong.......
I just feel that if a person's property is not entirely fenced in, the minute the dog walks out of a confined area, whether it be the house, or an area that is fenced, the dog should be on a leash...
That would totally eliminate the possibility of anything happening that may jeopardize the dog or anyone else...Thats just my opinion...

Nona I was about to say something at first because I thought you were even referring to those who have fenced in yards. I was thinking well I have a fenced in yard, should I still leash mine? lol But yes I completely agree, I see enough off leash dogs who are in their own yards......only to watch them follow me through about 10 peoples other yards barking at me the whole time. One tried to charge me the other day after he went through a few yeards, I kicked a ton of gravel in his face and he booted back to the house like a cheetah. With me I don't typically leave my dogs outside unsupervised. A group of kids were riding bikes on Saturday with their Pit Bull......who was OFF LEASH. Stupid parents for allowing their children to do that. I just told all of my dogs to sit, and they just watched the kids and the Pit Bull who took probably 10 minutes because one kids bike broke, and they kept having to get off the road because of traffic. We have a huge fully fenced in yard though, and I actually make it a point to keep mine under control.

WTF?
WTF?

A second "WTF"?

Malndobe; totally agree. Where will it end? IMO, abuse should be the only time gov't should be able to tell us what to do w/our animals on our own property. Gee, what fun it will be to have a dog when leash laws apply on our own property. Utterly ridiculous, and as I said initially, it won't work! The only thing it might do is pacify the simple minds who would think it sounded like a good idea.

I think some people would only be satisfied if they lived under communist rule.
