I have always fed Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish. IMO it has worked very well for Prince. The first three ingredients are sweet potato, salmon, and salmon meal. I have in cooperated TOTW Pacific Stream kibble a while ago and did not like the results. Stinky breath and stinky, softer stool ( that sticks to his butt ) ...I stopped adding the TOTW and his breath was fine and his stool was much better.
Anyway, I have some concerns about the Natural Balance because the sweet potato is the first ingredient. I decided that I would mix in a supplement of a good canned food for a little extra protein. I read almost a dozen of the best canned food labels and decided to go with Natural Balance Fish. After about two days I noticed the stinky dirty butt again. ....hmmm???
Long story short, the common ingredient between TOTW kibble and the canned Natural Balance is FISH....TOTW has fish in the ingredients instead of salmon. I do not have an ingredient list here, but I think fish is listed before the salmon. And the canned Natural Balance has fish as the first ingredient. The Natural Balance kibble has ONLY salmon ....
I have been doing a little research... salmon appears more preferable compared to fish according to what I have read. Has anyone ever had a dog that was bothered by fish, but did fine with salmon.????? Does anyone have any information on the difference between salmon and fish....I have not found very much information....
I went to the grocery store and bought a 14 oz can of salmon for $2.06....The pet store wanted anywhere from $2.60- $4.00 a can for salmon/fish mixed with lots of veggies.....

No explanation about fish/Salmon, but all of my Huskies have done excellent on TOTW Pacific. Stools that don't have much odor and are firm, breath for some reason reminds me of when we cook a ham though, but coats are nice and soft, and they all seem to do great on it over all.

Salmon is salmon, "fish" is any part of any fish, could be mackerel, tuna, halibut, alewife, carp, sucker, catfish, cod, sturgeon, moby dick, whatever. If it swims and isn't a mammal or lizard or snake, it's fish.

Maybe you should just go to the store and buy some fresh salmon and add it to the food that is working well for you.

Now there's an idea,,,,,,,,,things that make you go hmmmmm. But then when I give him kisses and stick my head in his mouth it's all stinky from him licking his poopy butt. Oh what to do, what to do.

Duberino....lol Moby Dick....I assumed that" fish" meant just about anything that swims...I was wondering more about the nutritional value between the two and whether or not anyone has had a dog do well on one and not the other....
As far as the kisses....I do love them kisses. That's why a clean little bottom is very important....
OGBS....I would not want to feed raw salmon based on what I have read. I thought a can would be quick and easy. Also, it is more economical then canned dog food.....: )

I feed taste of the wild Bison and Venison and my dogs love it. They all do great. Their coats are nice and full and are very shiny. No stinky breath and their stools are normal. Maybe you can try that flavor instead.

I have heard fresh salmon is NOT safe....????
The can I bought today for Prince says pink salmon..???....Are you concerned about the idea it is from a can rather than fresh ? or have you heard something about pink/red salmon.???
alphadog, If I decide to go with a different protein I would try TOTW again....: )

Canned salmon is safe, preservative free (that's why it's canned, to make it last longer), & WILD CAUGHT. It is canned right next to the docks. Fresh wild salmon, besides being ridiculously expensive, can have parasites, particularly liver flukes. It must be deep frozen, as they do to make sashimi safe to eat; or cooked.
Canned salmon is surprisingly healthful & wholesome. Fresh farmed salmon can be less wholesome, having been fed the ground up dead salmon that are produced by the hatchery, they can carry disease,(although this is rare), & they do not have the same nutritional benefits as wild caught salmon. As canned salmon IS wild caught, canned salmon is better for people, & dogs as well! I feed it at least weekly, & my dogs LOVE it. Does make for stinky kisses, LOL! Also makes for nice shiney coats! No effect on my dog's stools!
My salmon lecture for February, done before the first day of the month is dawned!
