Been away from the AKC ring for about 15 years and wondering who the brand name handlers are these days. In 'my day' Jimmy Moses, Gail Sprock, and Ken Tank were the top names nationally. I know Jimmy still shows and Ken is a judge now.

I have a friend with a dog that will do well in all-breed shows, but probably doesn't have the sidegait for the specialty ring.

Any handler suggestions? Thanks.

I'm sorry, I didn't read the area you had stated in your topic line..DUH..

I don't really think any one stands out today as much as Jimmy, Ken or Gail, did back in those days....
I got out of AKC showing back around 97....So I have been out of it for a while also....But our forum member Rik might know someone.....I think he still has contacts and might be able to help you....Wish I could be of more help to you....

Just curious as to how much AKC handlers charge these days--particularly at specialty shows. In the old days, the sky was the limit--huge fees (often retainer fees) plus travel, motel costs, and meals. Handlers often overbooked classes and left owners hanging until the last minute--deciding which of several dogs booked was most likely to win.  These guys could not derive a livelihood handling dogs for the German show ring--where a handling fee is generally the same as a class entry fee. However, there are several American breeders who "import" German handlers and "broker" their services--collecting their handling fees instead of the money going directly to the handlers in question..

There were a few like that, Louise. Like any profession they're not all great and some charge too much. Not so much now. Most of the good ones could do very well in the German ring, but in this country there are not very many German shows. Remember, a lot of us started with German dogs.
I always kept my fees reasonable, but since I'm judging now I don't know what they are charging. I'm raising my own handlers, lol.

Best regards,

Ken

Too bad they don't consider handling in the German ring for the going rate.

They would have to wear sports clothing at a sporting event--not suits and ties.

The last time I showed my last Amercan bred bitch in Veterans at an AKC specialty, Bob Penny handled for me gratis.

It's been 10 years since I used an AKC handler. At that time the fee was 75-125 (plus expenses) for the good ones at specialty. Multiply this by 3/4 day shows and it is quite expensive. I never got dumped, but I usually had a pretty good dog before I decided to part with the money. Have seen plenty of friends and acquaintances left without a handler.

My first WDA regional show in 2009 I was floored to be quoted $40,00 (puppy class) by one of the better handlers in North America and no expenses. Had to ask twice if this was correct.

To the OP, Ken is probably your best source on west coast handlers today. There is not another Jimmy.  I like Kent, Scotty and George B. but they are not in your area. Lots of promising newcomers. In your area, you could also contact Donna Sader.

good luck,
Rik
